First car 90 camaro rs 305 need a new engin
I have a have a 1990 camaro rs with a 305 tbi and a Borg Warner t5 tranny the engin is shot and I need a new one. I was wondering what is the biggest engin that would line up to the tranny. I'm a beggner so I need all the help I can get. My dream is to compleatly restore the car and eventuly become a monster. So if anyone could help me out it would mean alot. Thank you.

The T5 transmission is limited to the amount of torque that it can survive. That's why GM elected to put 305's ahead of them.. To get it back on the road, a "mild" 350 & the t5 will be your best combination.
Good luck

Artic, welcome aboard thirdgen.org.
The direct answer to your question is something on the order of "540 big block". The practical answer is a little more involved. Many members have put 350's and larger in front of their T5's, the key being how much abuse you're going to subject it to. An early TGO member (now inactive) had a healthy 400 in front of his non-World Class T5, including making some passes down the drag strip, and never suffered a transmission failure. Other members tear up their T5's with a stock LG4.
"Monster" status will probably require a T56 or other stouter transmission.
