400 SBC... what to do...

So I'm buying a 400 sbc block and was wondering if yall had any ideas to how to build it.

My idea/plans are to get all forged internals, dart heads, not sure on cam/crank, intake or carb. But I do want to pro charge it with probably f1 or f2.

Lots of planning and researching but i was wondering if any one here knows about a 400 build similar or any at all.

I got a nice 400 block with just main bearings, 2 bolt. No idea how far away you are but $100 it's yours.

I was going to build a street/strip motor for my IROC based off atillas build, bought a scat rotating assembly but changed my mind and want to just ditch the car and motor for a 4th gen.

Not to be a party pooper, but if your going to boost it,I strongly recommend going with an aftermarket block.I popped 2 stock 400 blocks with a 150hp shot of nitrous,I would bet you anything your going to break blocks almost instantly with a procharger.

What broke on it? I can't imagine a 150 shot destroying a block unless it was due to ring failure... and for some reason the 4 bolt mains on these motors was weaker then the 2 bolts (even before being splayed).

Re: 400 SBC... what to do...

If a 525 horse N/A build isn't enough, you do need a Dart SHP block. If you want over 700 horses with a production block, then do a 383 instead. And be sure the block you start with has no core shift. The '68-'74 350 blocks were heaviest, but most are probably 60 over by now. The best ones had "010" and "020" cast in, close to each other, under the timing cover area. this denotes high nickel and high tin. One helps with heat, one helps reduce bore wear. But these blocks tend to show core shift, and the 2 most important things at the 700 horse level are a heavy casting and no core shift.
Forget splayed aftermarket mains, by the time you do that, you may as well just buy the SHP block instead. If ARP main studs aren't good enough in your mind, then the SHP is it. i've yet to see a stock main cap fail unless it was hit by a broken rod or a broken crank.

Never underestimate the ability of cylinder pressure.I have split cylinderwalls on both blocks, castings sucked at the point where the majority of the 400 blocks were cast.
