T-Tops and Too much TORQUE

will swapping an aftermarket engine in my 1990 camaro with ttops be an issue for the ttops?? something ive heard is that most fbody's were equipped with engines like the 305 so the torque couldnt twist the frame and in turn damage the ttops..

Re: T-Tops and Too much TORQUE

T-tops are surviving in some pretty serious cars. But if you're worried, you can fab up some braces that'll be hidden when the tops are on. Or if you're shooting for much more than a 502 with a small nitrous kit, just do a proper cage.
That'd probably belong in the sub-forum called "Fabrication"
Until then, subframe connectors do a world of good. And the T-tops are NOT the reason for the 305s. T-tops were available with the 350 when it returned for '87.

Thanks Atilla, I wasn't sure what to think because i've been talking with friends about the swap and saving money..I would like to put a 383 in, so I guess subframe connectors would be a must.

Re: T-Tops and Too much TORQUE

I'd agree with you needing sub-cons, but up to, say, 600 horses or so, no worry about the T-tops.

Re: T-Tops and Too much TORQUE

ive had anything from 350hp to 650hp and never had a problem with the sub frame or t-tops. now ive seen a 82 with a built 396 that he beat the **** out of it, shatter a windsheild because of chassie flex.

Re: T-Tops and Too much TORQUE

The first year I had my car, it only had SFC and ran 14.0 in the 1/4 mile. At the start of the second season, the car ran a 12.0 and I had a roll bar installed before the next race. At the time, roll bars were required at 11.99. They're now required at 11.49.

My car now runs low 9's. Although it's been back halved and has a full cage, it still has T-tops and over the years, I've never had a problem with them.
