86 Maro v6 to v8 tranny question

Asking this question on behalf if my dad. After letting him play with my Firebird for a day he got the 3rd gen bug...and bad. He has been a Ford guy his entire life and my brother and I about had a stroke when he pulled up in a mint condition 86 T Top Berlinetta Camaro. And now he wants to put a 350 in it. To my understanding the V6 transmission input shaft has a lower spline count than the v8 tranny. Can we just swap the input shaft? He plans on getting a torque converter with a higher stall, so that wont need to be re used.

Re: 86 Maro v6 to v8 tranny question

Auto or manual? The automatics from the 6 bangers are not as sturdy and won't hold up - it can be rebuilt, but I read it's not worth the effort. In addition, the bellhousing on a V6 auto tranny will not fit with an 8cyl motor, and so it has to be replaced to even connect the 2.

If it's a manual, the tranny will not hold up to any workout on the 350 motor. There are folks running T5's behind 350's, but they either granny drive the car or eat the T5 quick.

If it's an auto, he really needs to just get a V8 700R4. If it's a manual, he needs to look into a T56 6 speed from the 4th gen F-body cars.
