V6 2.8 to V8 305: Major Failure...
V6 2.8 to V8 305: Major Failure...
Good Evening everyone,
I have a 1989 Pontiac Firebird Coupe that came stock with a 2.8L V6, and 5 speed manual. I bought a 1989 Firebird Formula with the V8 5.0L 305, 5 speed engine as a donor car. I swapped the engines and made a few modifications.
The cool thing is, according to the electrical diagrams, from the firewall in, all the electrical system is the same, so the wiring harness to the computer and in the engine bay was all I needed.
Here are all the modifications I did to the stock setup of the V8:
No joy, in the process of wiring the MAP sensor, I've also adjusted and I guess "hot wired" the fan controls to kick on automatically. I was experiencing a condition where the engine would just get too hot and the fan wouldn't kick on at all, and I actually (one night) saw the exhaust pipes get glowing red and spewing oil. I think i have a bad seal on the rear of the block where I was supposed to silicone it.
Now, what she does, with the flashed ECM is without any additional fuel, the car will start. It will idle very rough, produce a horrible fuel smell in the engine compartment and from the exhaust (I suspect there's an exhaust leak in the engine bay as well). And the second I give her a little bit of gas, and let go, she dies. I don't know what to do... I need advice, and a bit of encouragement. I have an alldatadiy.com subscription and manuals up the ying yang, so any documentation that is requested, or more information, I will gladly provide.
Thank you for any of your ideas friends.
Very Respectfully,
Toros

Here are all the modifications I did to the stock setup of the V8:
- I replaced the stock fuel injectors with Accel 28ft/lb injectors (Stock is supposed to be 19lbs)
- I did not reassemble the vacuum system properly.
- Removed the Canister Purge Solenoid entirely and lord knows what else to do with the vacuum system.
- I removed the A.I.R. pump and replaced it with a pulley.
- I removed the Mass Air Flow sensor and replaced it with a MAP sensor to accommodate the next bullet.
- I replaced the stock ECM with one from http://www.dynamicefi.com/
- I removed then added back an oxygen sensor.
- All new shorti plugs to accommodate the hedman headers, all new 8MM wires.
- All new ignition coil, distributor, rotor and distributor cap.
- All new water pump, new gaskets and seals all around...
- New entire exhaust, eliminated the CATs,
- New hedman headers,
- new y pipe
- new "cat back" but no cat.
- new muffler and tale pipes.

Re: V6 2.8 to V8 305: Major Failure...
Well me and a friend had came across the same problem but in a 302 boss 5.0 91 mustang we had put gt40 heads roller rockers ceramic headers 21 lbs injectors and over head cams but before stuck the cam in we was running a bit rich aka to much fuel not enough air but when we put the over head cams in it opened up the valves to let more air in which equaled out the amount of fuel and air we still have to get it programmed to get the full potential but it worked and kept it alive she runs great even without the program but if and when we do that it will be even better. But i hope this will help give it a try its a bit expensive but it sound to me like you want supe it up with the 28lbs injectors but your getting too much fuel and flooding it. that leak in the headers could be messing with the o2 sensor if bad enough. Jack of oxygen reading could be messing with compression ratio fix the flooding and check back when its stays alive then check the leak.

It sounds to me like the computer has no idea what it is doing. Is it the right computer for the stuff that's in the car? Is the distributor you replaced computer controlled like the one from the donor car? You did not put the vacuum system back in properly? Aren't there things in the vacuum system that the computer needs to run the car properly?
To me, it sounds like the computer can't figure out how to run the car properly. The exhaust was red hot and spewing oil? That doesn't sound good......
