Need some help with a 91' Formula..Please!

Hello, I've got a 1991 Formula 305TBI that's driving me crazy. A few days after I bought the car, I replaced the battery and alternator. Car ran fine for a week, then died in traffic. I took it to Merchants and they told me it needed a new fuel pump and fuel pump regulator. Since they quoted me $1700, I let another shop do the work. They replaced everything and it still wouldn't crank. After two days they got it running by replacing: the distributor, wires, body control modual, battery cables and a sensor. Again the car ran fine. Then I got greedy and cut off the entire exhaust system. Ran fine for a month, then started to backfire and eventually stopped running. Now I can get it to crank but it doesn't stay running. When I crank it, I have to keep my foot on the gas or it will die. When I let off the gas either the rpms go crazy and it dies immediatley, or it settles into a smooth ideal and chokes out. I was told cutting out the exhuast caused this problem but I've owned an 82' T/A, 87' Formula 350 and a 94 T/A and I did the same thing to every last one of them, with no problems at all. Does anyone out there have any advice? When the car dies, the power steering goes out and the check engine light comes on. Thanks in advance.

Unplug the CTS (yel and blk wires) on the front of the intake near the water neck and see if it runs any better

Thank you very much. Those wires were both melted together! I see you live in NC. I live in Raleigh. Is there anyone you know of that can do an LT1 swap for @4K? Thanks again for helping me get the car on the road.
