Good 305?
Good 305?
I'm thinking about buying a 305 from a guy on craigslist but I want to know if it's a good set-up or not:
305 .60 over
350 crank
mild cam
holley high rise intake
edlebrock 600 cfm 4 barrel
9:1 pistons
882 shaved heads
solid motor mounts and a th350 trans. etc.
Is this 305 a good one?

I'd have a hard time calling anything with 882 heads "good", especially a 305. Probably closer to 8:1 than 9:1, too.

882 heads are mid-70s big chamber, low-compression, low-performance smog heads with lightweight, crack-prone castings.
I just saw the "350 crank", too. Not what I'd want to see in a 305.

Re: Good 305?
The 60 over is worrying me as well - didn't know a 305 could be punched out that far - and at that, it would probably be the last time it could be punched. Got to wonder how anyone messed up a 305 badly enough to have to punch it that far.
Can I ask why looking at a 305 when a 350 is the same cost? You live in the south - we are 350 heaven here, they're a dime a dozen!

The 350/305 cranks are the same.

I would like to go with a 350 ,but for what the guy is asking in trade for the motor and trans I figured it was better than nothing.

As far as budget: whatever it takes to make this thing fast
My goal is to fully restore the 89 but I'm not going to start taking the car apart until I have all the parts to complete the restoration.

A 305 build out of mismatched leftovers isn't a good way to go fast, and is a downgrade from what you've got already.

Re: Good 305?
or if there's nothing wrong with your 305 just get a set of 062 heads, shorty headers and a vortec tbi intake. should see a very nice increase for very little money.

Re: Good 305?
Not sure where to start:
"good 305"
"jumbo shrimp"
"military intelligence"
"feminine logic"
"masculine sensitivity"
etc.
But then, even as 305s go, I find it hard to imagine one much WORSE than that combo you listed.
I would not buy it. I would not accept it as a gift. I would have to be paid to accept it; enough to handle disposal costs. I'd guess, $250 - 300 at a minimum, since I HATE schlepping junk cast-iron around.
Keep shopping. I'd suggest, someplace besides CL, unless you're either SUPER desperate, you really don't care what you get, or you get your charitable donations tax deduction by paying other people for their worthless garbage instead of just letting them throw it away.

Re: Good 305?
Sorry, I forgot to mention:
Those heads, on that block, with those pistons, results in a compression ratio of about 7.6:1.
That's why it's such a bad "combo". It's even worse than the sum of its parts, which are already about as bad as it gets, individually. In fact, I'd suspect it's more of an "accidental" combo, and not really a "combo" at all: somebody just had some stuff laying around and bolted it together to try to find a sucker to fleece a few coins out of. It wouldn't be too much of a surprise to find out it has never been installed in a vehicle; just slapped together and up onto CL.
Also I forgot a few of these:
"civil war"
"virtual reality"
"government benefits"
I'm sure we can all think of more of those...

Re: Good 305?
A 350 block would be a much more robust choice. You can stroke it out to increase the displacement or you can also reduce the displacement to have an engine that can run much higher rpms.

Re: Good 305?
You 305 in your RS is far superior to what the "rebuilt" 305 has to offer. Get another roller cam capable 305 or get a roller cam capable 350 motor.
