decent deal? on this 350 ?

Hey engine guys, i'm looking for a 350 to drop in place of my 305 TPI. Will keep my TPI. Does this sound like a decent deal to add my TPI end to? Thanks

This engine has about 700 miles on it. It came out of a 92 Chevy 1500 extended Cab 2 wheel drive truck that was redoing. I sold the truck and keep the engine because the guy already had an engine and I bought a 93 that had a new engine in it and have no need for it now. Here is a list of things that was done to the engine.

*The engine was bored .30 over with brand new pistons.
*Connecting Rods were redone.
*The heads had a three angle valve job with new valves installed as well as springs and retainers were replaced.
* had a new high volume oil pump installed
* New Rod and main bearings
* NEW Crank Not a Turned one, A Brand NEW ONE
* Three quarter RV Cam and Lifters
* All new gaskets
* Double Roller Time Chain
* New Fly wheel

All the work was done by the Machine shop they even Short Blocked it for me. I have a lot of money invested in this engine because it was done right. This engine is not just a basic rebuild. I have had it sitting on an engine stand for about a year now looking for another project vehicle to put it in but don’t have the time or money so my loss is your gain. I have about $1,700.00 dollar invested in this engine but would be willing to sacrifice it for $950.00. That is half what I have in it and you want find another engine that has been done right for this price. Please email me if you have any questions at don’t let this one get away if you need a good engine for your vehicle.

Sounds alright - except maybe the "RV" cam - but cams are cheap, and easily replaced. Get input from other more experienced TPI folks on that cam and a better (if any) choice. Only other issue might be the heads - getting a casting number would help know what they are. But $950 ain't bad at all.

yea, i believe a better cam would /could be installed. I'm not sure about it. The price seems good, i just hate getting into something without hearing it run. Chance you take in this kind of situation though.

hmmm

I'll play Devils Advocate

For sale, truck engine with poor cylinder heads. Please don't expect me to show you receipts of the rebuild but I will tell a good tale about selling a truck to a guy who would rather not buy my truck for $1,000 more with a rebuilt engine. Instead, the guy would rather have to deal with installing an engine himself into it so I sold it without an engine blah blah

anyway, I want $950 but I say it's worth $1700 so you are getting a good deal. If you want to use this engine for performance, then you will need to purchase new heads, cam, pushrods and lifters but let's not discuss how you could get a new Goodwrench long block for the same price, not get my BS story and have a warranty to boot.

Very good, i see what you're saying. I'm really doubtfull of alot of what i see on craigslist. Some can ruin a good thing by screwing someone. I'll keep my eyes open .. see what else i can find.

it can be tempting, trust me I know. The best price I could find to transport an engine to my home from the central part of the USA was around $300.

I was shopping for an engine and checked web sites and Ebay. I almost bought an engine where the seller claimed it had 54k original miles but had no proof. He sent photos and it was a rust bucket. It had all of the accessories so there was some value in that. But, I could not in good conscience do all the work of dropping it into my car without opening it up to see it's true condition. The $450 sale price, plus $300 shipping, plus a $1300 rebuild because I knew I wanted to be sure, simply made the engine overpriced.

I would have been better off getting one of the new goodwrench long blocks rather than considering some of the junkers that people are trying to sell. As far as I'm concerend, if you can't show me documentation to back up your claims, then it's a piece of crap. I eventually just yanked my engine and had it rebuilt.

I know that many here have dropped in engines from junk yards, $500 engines they picked up etc but if I'm going through those motions and all of that work, then the engine is going to be in known good working order.
