V6 or V8?

Right now I have an 87 2.8. For a while I've wanted to swap a V8 into it. Within the past couple of days I've read thati can make pretty good power out of my V6. What do you guys think? Swap or modify? I'm 17 so its not like I have a whole lot of money.

Re: V6 or V8?

I have an '83 z28 that I got for my first car when I was 16. Last year when I was 17 I bought a '90 camaro and put a 350 out of a tahoe in it. It is a lot of work to swap a motor, and if you switch to a v8, you need a v8 transmission as well. But if you know what to do, and do the work yourself you can have a nice little motor set up.

You also have a choice of putting in a 3.4 out of a newer camaro/firebird and doing some work to one of them. My friend has a fiero with a '96 3.4 and that thing could move if he did some work to it

Re: V6 or V8?

My personal opinion is that if you dont have a lot of money, and there is nothing wrong with the way the car drives, leave the motor alone. You have two choices when doing things. You can save money here and there and cut corners, but sacrafice reliabilty, or make a nice fast car but dump a good chunk of money into. I can also tell you from expierence that any project you have planned will almost always wind up costing double in the end from what you think it will cost.

If the car runs good now and you know you want a V8 down the road, I would just drive it as is and save for the motor swap, but save so that you can do it right. I read too many posts on here where people are doing swaps and cutting corners and not wanting to buy things, and then wonder why it doesnt run right. The most popular one I hear is that I just bought this motor off craigslist and it has some old iron heads and huge unknown cam. Why does my car not run right?

Save the money and do it right, later down the road.

Read my sticky in the v6 section, it should help you decide which engine you want ultimately, it all depends on what you want really.

Couldn't agree more.

If you rely on this car as a daily driver then don't touch it other than basic maintenance.
