1986 305 swap for a 1987 305? anybody knows?

i have two engines, one is a Stock 1986 305 Carbed totally stock and stats says it has 150 HP, also i have a 1987 305 (5.0) TPI im thinking use this 1987 but with an Edelbrock intake and a 600 CFM edelbrock carb (swap TPI to CARB), also i have a hooker short headers, Flowmaster 80 series and no Catalytic converter...

im also thinking taking out the A/C...

So with all this, does anybody knows how many HP could i get with the 87 engine considering the last words?

Im not thinking going on a 1/4 mile, i just want a decent Z28... thats all...

i will consider all the opinions!!! thanks...

The difference in power between a carb'd '86 305 (155-165 HP, depending upon which model it was installed in) and the '87 TPI 305 (190 HP) came from the cam and exhaust.

So, putting a carb on a TPI 305 would produce about - 190 HP. Low-RPM torque would be reduced, and power would move slightly higher in the RPM range. Why is this? Take a look at where the L69 (carb'd, 190 HP) and LB9 (TPI, 190 HP) made their max power & torque - 4800 & 4000 RPMs, respectively, for peak power; 3200 & 2800 RPMs, respectively, for max torque.

Improving the exhaust from TPI manifolds & y-pipe to Hooker shorties for that application (2055HKR), along with a good cat & cat-back, would give you about a 10% increase. So, now you're up to about 210 HP.

It makes more sense to keep the TPI on the '87 and just improve the exhaust.

Taking out the AC doesn't improve power. A slight improvement due to the power/weight improvement, but that's all.

BTW, if this is licensed in SD, the Edelbrock carb ain't legal.

thanks five7kid...

the i would like to keep the TPI but i think it would be a mess to connect all the ECU, wires and all the injection components into the 1986, it's a Sport Coupe, thats why im thinking in swaping into the 5.0 1987 but carbed, another question:

what if i install a Edelbrock intake, 600 cfm carb, the heades, and the catback into the 305 1986 engine? does this make more sense? im just wondering! also i will delete the A/C components, doesnt work anyway!

thanks...

The Edelbrock carb doesn't make a lick of sense. The stock CC carb is superior in all respects.

The heads are the same except for the intake bolt pattern and valve cover type. No difference in power.

The '86 has slightly higher compression, but a lame cam. And, no, you can't put the '87 cam in the '86 block.

It would make more sense to put the '87 longblock in the '86, get an '87-up spreadbore carb intake, with the headers & cat-back from the '87. With that, you'd get the best carb, the best cam, and the best exhaust.

Swapping the TPI system over from the '87 to the '86 wouldn't be that bad. Everything will unbolt and bolt back in. The stickiest issue would be the in-tank fuel pump, and I'd gladly take that on for the benefits of EFI over carb.

I don't know why people have this attraction to Edelbrock carbs. They're okay if you don't have a carb, aren't interested in best possible power, and want something cheap. But if you've got a functioning q-jet or TPI, you'd have to pay me bigtime to get me to put one on my car (like buy me a Vette to park next to the 3rd gen). Don't forget an Edelbrock won't bolt to a factory intake manifold (getting an Edelbrock intake solves that), and you need to buy a different distributor; and if automatic transmission, get a TV cable geometry corrector and rig up some means of locking the torque converter clutch. And, it won't make as much power or get as good of fuel economy as either the q-jet or TPI. Nothing but cons to Edelbrock carbs, as far as I'm concerned.
