having a fuel issue in my fuel injection to carb swap

i swapped in a carbed 350 into my camaro that had a tpi 305 in it. im having issues getting it to run. it has a mechanical fuel pump from an earlier 305 car. and i used the fuel injection return line from the tank as the new pick up. is that my problem? i know its a smaller line, butt i figured since it went down to the botom of the tank i could use it as a pickup. is that my problem? should i get a carburated fuel pick up, and run the regular feed line? is something stopping the fuel? whats my best option? id also like to keep the fuel gauge. any help appreciated!! thanks!

Yes. When I pulled the assembly put it went just as low as the pump.
