Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
When you're ready to dial in the Durabux, you can get it done with some off the shelf tuners. And, no, I'm not talking Hyperchiptechdiablobanks... Look at PPE. I'm running their Xclerator in my 06 LBZ, and that thing is scary fast for an 8,000 lb truck. Of course, if you know what you're doing, and live by the pyro, you can run EFIlive. I think that'll be my next step as well. You'll find that you catch some sort of "more power" virus the Durabux, and suddenly 600 HP is not enough.
I am a little worried about the 4L80 idea though. I think you'll be glazing the clutches pretty quick. The 6.6 makes an incredible amount of torque at 2,500 RPM. You'll be over 800 lb*ft at that point if you get your tune dialed in. Idk what kind of clutch holding power you'll get out of the 4L80 at the RPM.
Speaking of low RPM's... what do you plan to run for a final drive? My truck is at 1,700 RPM, give or take at 70 MPH with the 6 speed Ally. If I run in 5th or 4th, my mileage goes to crap.
Anyways, the build looks awesome. Can't wait to see it done. Would love to see it at the track one day. Best of luck.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
im going to use efi live and distance tuning where I log then send off and get a tune with the V2 and I realize the hunger for more power but thats no different with gas or diesel you will always want more 600 range I can get away with a stock bottom ill start building a new block once this is all good and done for more
the 80 will be fine im going with a spragless 4th and red clutch same that would be used in a allison build and it will have a good convertor built for well over what I plan making
still need to figure out the final drive I might see how the 3.42s do and go from there but you have to remember your truck is 8k brick with a 32 to 33 inch tire ill have a 27.5 tire so thats all up in the air now still I need to get farther along to know what will work best but the final rearend will be a fab9

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
I guess I was concerned about developing enough line pressure at low RPM to prevent the clutches from slipping and chattering. That would be the biggest difference between the behavior of the 4L80 and the Ally.
I found a breakdown of same year transmission ratios…
2006 4L80/4L85 Four-speed Auto. ( MT1/MN8 ), with LQ4 6.0L Vortec Gas V8
Axle Ratio: 4.10
Trans. ratios: -- Total Ratio ... (max. torque @ rear axle)
First: 2.48 ------ 10.168 ........ (3,660)
Second: 1.48 ---- 6.068 ........ (2,184)
Third: 1.00 ------ 4.100 ........ (1,476)
Fourth: 0.75 ----- 3.075 ........ (1,107)
2007 6L90 Six-Speed Auto. ( MYD ), with LY6 6.0L Vortec Gas V8
Axle Ratio: 3.73
Trans. ratios: -- Total Ratio ... (max. torque @ rear axle)
First: 4.03 ------ 15.032 ........ (5,607)
Second: 2.36 ---- 8.803 ........ (3,283)
Third: 1.53 ------ 5.707 ........ (2,129)
Fourth: 1.15 ----- 4.290 ........ (1,600)
Fifth: 0.85 ---- -- 3.171 ........ (1,183)
Sixth: 0.67 ------ 2.499 ......... (..932)
2006 Allison 1000 Six-speed (MW7), with L18 8.1L Vortec Gas V8
Axle Ratio: 3.73
Trans. ratios: -- Total Ratio ... (max. torque @ rear axle)
First: 3.10 ------ 11.563 ........ (5,203)
Second: 1.81 ---- 6.751 ........ (3,038)
Third: 1.41 ------ 5.259 ........ (2,367)
Fourth: 1.00 ----- 3.730 ........ (1,679)
Fifth: 0.71 ---- -- 2.648 ........ (1,192)
Sixth: 0.61 ------ 2.275 ........ (1,024)
2006 Allison 1000 Six-speed ( MW7 ), with LBZ 6.6L Duramax diesel
Axle Ratio: 3.73
Trans. ratios: -- Total Ratio ... (max. torque @ rear axle)
First: 3.10 ------ 11.563 ........ (7,516)
Second: 1.81 ---- 6.751 ........ (4,388)
Third: 1.41 ------ 5.259 ........ (3,419)
Fourth: 1.00 ----- 3.730 ........ (2,425)
Fifth: 0.71 ---- -- 2.648 ........ (1,721)
Sixth: 0.61 ------ 2.275 ........ (1,479)
One thing that I would like to point out is that in 2006 the OE tire size on these truck was 245/75R16E. That’s a 30.5” tire. FWIW.
Overall, it seems that you will be leaving nothing to chance.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
you are right about there being enough line pressure because it wont be spinning high enough but I can assure myself with ajusting the pressure and the 80s do produce low line pressure and have been behind the duramax from the factory in all the 6.6 dmax conversion vans stock to stock
what I will have to see is how it feels rather than rely on the numbers is the final drive I want to have the best well rounded car tq will make up for gearing but I dont want to be at a point where I trap at 132 and i redline at 132 and my top speed is 132 I go alot by feel more than numbers. like one motor I had was alot less powerful numbers wise than guys I raced but I would destroy them some of it was driving, weight, gears, hell the enviroment that I raced in there are alot of things that paper and numbers will not give me

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
lol they were a deal and they are rare being they were only on a few models so I might be holding on to them
they were gunmetal then painted and poorly painted too because where the curb rash is I can peel it off in flakes
Re coat them or polish them and sell for 4 times what I paid

Im going to use them just have to mini tub the rear and the tires are 345 35 r 19 DRs that are 404 a piece but its going to look mean
Now for some opinions I have a white car and I like chrome or polished aluminum but what color should I coat the rims if I decide to powdercoat instead of getting them chromes or polishing them
I am painting the car bright white with a blue pearl and the black parts will have a red pearl and the RS will be the R will look like a ice cube and the S will look like a the cube is on fire the motor will be accented with blue powdercoating either cobalt or a translucent over chrome powder

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
You took my dreams and are putting them into reality!!! I wanted to do this after college. Your mpg are going to be ridiculous!!! Hotrod mag published a 94 mustang with a duramax that runs 9's and hits 38 mpg. He also ran over two hundred in the standing mile. You chose an awesome engine to swap into a thirdgen. Diesels sound awesome and perform great. This world needs more of them. Thanks for taking on this project!!!

Yeah my rims are 20x12 19x10. The rears are 335-25-20....285-35-19. I am going to keep the stock body lines and tub it. Nice build. You are flying through it. Great job.

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
When you throw in the terms of Izuzu and diesel, they've never been in any Chevy I've ever owned and I've owned a lot of them from back in the day when anything from a small block fit on almost any other small block and ditto for the big blocks. That being said, I do find this an interesting swap and admire the efforts that are being done to make it work. And being an old drag racer, I'm anxious to see the end result. Maybe I'll be a convert.

anything duramax NOW as in the past 2 years is 90 % GM they have been redesigning the duramax to exclude izuzu from the rights because toyota now owns a part of izuzu so to keep them from getting it they had to make it all GM
look up the 4.5 duramax that they were supposed to make thats an awsome motor same size and weight as a 350 and it got 30 plus mpg in a 1500 also made same power as a 6.6

I was mainly subscribing to the thread more than anything. Don't get me wrong I have wanted to do a 6.5 TD for a few years.

The Duramax is a General Motors diesel engine family for light- and medium duty trucks, designed by Isuzu. The 6.6-liter Duramax is produced by DMAX, a joint venture between GM and Isuzu in Moraine, Ohio. This engine was initially installed in 2001 model year Chevy and GMC trucks and has been an option since then in pickups, vans, and medium-duty trucks. In 2006, production at Moraine was reportedly limited to approximately 200,000 engines per year.[1] On May 9, 2007, DMAX announced the production of the 1,000,000th Duramax V-8 diesel at its Moraine facility.[1]

Re: Duramax Thirdgen Swap
Nope, never owned any kind of diesel. I joined this forum because I thought this was about cars...Sorry about my ignorance 'SweetRevelation" but the closest I've even gotten to owning a truck is my 82 El camino.
I thought this might be an interesting thread to follow but personal attacks? because of something associated with Izuzu? count me out!

Hey richboll don't leave. This site is about cars, badass cars, and creative minds that create these beauties from a twisted vision in their head. No insults just jabbing back and forth. Keep up the great work Lunati. I am close to mocking up the k member for my build as well.
