LB9 TPI replacement, crate options?
Hello all. I won't pretend to be much more than ignorant mechanically. I can turn wrenches just fine, but don't know much more than what can get me in trouble with engines.
I accidentally found a 1985 z28 for sale near me, I wasn't looking to buy, but Camaros and Jeeps have always been my "thing" with vehicles. I have a Jeep, and the Z piqued my interest. I took a look at it today with a friend that is a mechanic. It burns oil, you can smell it and see it. The owner said it leaks down the valve stems, my buddy said it could very well be that, but in his opinion, the engine has a limited shelf life.
So I've been looking at crate engines, and I (in my previously mentioned ignorance) can't seem to find a replacement. that isn't a different engine that would require more purchase of parts to make work, as compared to "out with the old and in with the new"
Can anyone here point me at the direct swap replacement? By the way, I did find the zz383 (i think I'm recalling that number correctly) which seemed to be that, but I'm not looking for that much performance, or that big of a price tag.

If you're not looking to upgrade (say, to a 350), I would recommend that you get that motor rebuilt. It will be cheaper than a crate motor, and you'll know that you're getting exactly what you need. Most standard "replacement" crate motors are low compression crap. The 85 LB9 made 215 horsepower, due to a good cam, decent compression, and decent flowing heads (for a 305). None of those items are likely to be as good on a replacement crate motor.

Hey man, thanks for your reply. I had paralysis by analysis and didn't buy, but I appreciate you answering. Thanks again
