305 Head question
I have two sets of 305 heads, 14101081 or 14102187 the 081s came of my original tpi motor, i understand these are better heads than the 187's....
My question is why? They look identical, i haven’t taken the valves out, but anywhere i point my vernier at them they measure up the same..
whats going on here?
Thanks in advance

Re: 305 Head question
Not sure what was revealed there, but on a similar note, my heads need to be gone over. I at least need new valve guides. I'm a little inexperienced, and I don't want to take my car apart, take the heads to the machine shop, get them back and put them back in the car. I could just see the car sitting in my driveway with the engine apart for months.
So my plan is to buy some heads, then swap them onto the engine in one weekend.
Is this plan stupid? How interchangeable are the heads? Can I take a set with the same casting number as what's on the car and just swap them? Or do I need to replace the lifters and pushrods at the same time? From what I understand, I need to pull the engine to replace those.
With almost 100k miles, swapping in a 350 is another option, but in the "time + money = awesome car" equation, I don't have much of either variable. I'd like a quicker, easier, if shorter term, fix for now.

ya shouldn't hijack someone elses thread, but get a different set of heads and get after it, you can reuse all of the lifters and pushrods and rocker arms, "pushrods, rocker arms, are the only parts that you will have to remove from the valve train for a head change, lifters can stay put.
