2.8 to 350 Swap
Ok so pretty much just pulled the motor and tranny , putting a 350 block and trany in it and was wondering if I still need the ECM at all? Going to be putting newer guages in it , and if I do still need it , what all for?

I moved this from the Carburetor forum to the Engine Swap forum for two reasons. 1) You aren't asking a question specifically about carbs, and 2) there is a V6 to V8 swap sticky in the top section of the Engine Swap forum.
I assume this is the '86 in your user info. The ECM controls fuel and ignition functions for the engine, as well as some emissions, fuel pump power, and if auto transmission, the torque converter clutch lockup. It doesn't have anything to do with gauges.
Whether you need the ECM depends upon what the 350 is equipped with. Most likely it has a non-computer carb and a non-lockup torque converter. If that is the case, then the only function you need the ECM for is the fuel pump. However, if your transmission has a lockup torque converter, then you will need to provide that function by another means, because with out the inputs your V6 provided to the ECM, it won't know when to lock up the TCC. If by chance you have a computer carb, you'll need a different ECM, as your V6 computer can't run a computer carb. If you have some sort of EFI (which I doubt, since you posted this in the Carburetor forum originally), then you'll need to either modify the ECM (and harness), or get the ECM that came with the EFI.

Re: 2.8 to 350 Swap
I'm doing a 1986 2.8tbi to a 70's 383carb swap, i need to know what i will need in terms of ecm and how will i run my fuel pump with the carb motor and what type of fuel regulator i will need as its a 383.
The evap system on my 86 firebird will be no longer needed?
vacuum lines can be gone?
fuel pump, should i just take it out or what would i be the best option with that...
Would the stock diff also be enough for the 383? i know its the same for a 350... but 383?

Re: 2.8 to 350 Swap
to run the fuel system, make sure the block has provisions for a mechanical fuel pump. If it does use that to feed the non-computer carb on your 383.
As far as smog equip, lose it. you wont pass with it on a non computer carb 383.
evap system can be connected to a new vaccum routing. search the forums for new diagrams.
stock dif will be fine as long as your not trying to launch.
Your issue will most likely be transmission. what are you using?

will the original 2.8 driveshaft fit into the new tpi 350 i have? it is a 700r4 tans in there and a new 700r4 trans going in... bell housing difference so have to change the freaking transmission... ecm(from what?), wiring harness(350TPI), radiator(V8 camaro?), and rpm gauges(V8 Camaro?) have to be changed over am i forgetting anything?
of course springs and sway bar...
1986 firebird and a mid to late 80's 350 tpi going in... should be fun... let me know if theres anything I need. not a mechanic. but a gear head for sure!!

Ok, I just did a 3.1 to a 355 swap, I used a T5 instead of a 700R4. If you are going to run a carb, then you have 2 choices, remove fuel pump, replace with enough hose to reach bottom of tank, install a external electric fuel pump and a regulator or use a mechanical pump, I used a holley blue and I used braided line from tank up to carb. I went with MSD complete ignition system So I dont use the ecm at all, the only problem I have now is my fuel guage doesnt work, still looking into that, you will need to move your engine mounts forward and replace with V8 mounts, Jegs sells headers and exhaust for the car as well, I have a set of headers that will fit if you need. now as to vaccumn lines, if your heater is vaccumn controlled, like mine you will need to hook that vaccumn line back up to carb. If you use a hei dist, then find a power wire that is hot when key is on and hook it to the dist, that is all you should need. Becarefull as to what intake you use, I have a holley strip dominator and with the carb on, I cant use a filter, I have a 2 inch cown piece to go on my hood so I can run an air filter. I forgot about radiator, just get a V8 radiator for the v6 radiator water knecks are not on the correct side, I used the existing electric fan and bought a temp sender with relay to turn fan on at 200 and off at 180, ebay has these for 32.00 easy to install! If you nee more help or have anymore questions, please ask. Tim
