383 build help

We own a 1987 IROC-Z. We are currently looking for a 383 stroker to replace the 305 TPI. We want to know what needs to be replaced, changed, etc for it to work. Will all the gauges work or will we have to replace some or all of them? Will we have to replace the radiator/ cooling fans? Would the fuel pump need to be changed? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: 383 build help

Sbc is a sbc for the most part. Minor differences in blocks may dictate need for different starter, flex plate, oil pan, etc but theoretically all the other stuff will bolt up

If factory fuel injection and wish to keep it, you can. Just hook it all back up in the new motor. Now the heads on the motor would need to have correct accessory bolt pattern for the factory stuff to work. Factory rad can be used but i'd get it flushed and cleaned or buy a factory new replacement.

Ecm will likely need a chip burned for new motor however, depending how crazy you get with the combo

Re: 383 build help

There are a couple more things you'll need to replace if you keep the EFI. The stock 19lb injectors won't be able to support a 383, so you'll need bigger injectors that would be sized based on your anticipated horsepower levels. This selection will also largely dictate how the chip is burned.

The 305 & 350 cars also had some other differences, namely the knock sensor and the electronic spark control module. I'm not sure the ESC does a damned thing, so I don't think you'll benefit from replacing it, but you will need a new knock sensor. I assume that since it's the same block, that the 350 knock sensor will be fine with a 383. If it's not, it may need to be eliminated, which again, may require some special considerations in the ECM tune.

Re: 383 build help

We are not looking to keep the EFI, i apologize for not mentioning. The 383 stroker we wish to put in is carbureted and do not plan on fuel injecting it.
