86 TPI into an 83 z-28

Ok so here is the deal, I have an 86 Iroc that has a TPI motor in it and i was gonna take it out rebuild it and stick it back in, that is untill I found an 83 z-28 with everything in it except the motor my question is, what would it take to just transfer all of the TPI stuff over to the Z-28. the reason why i want to do it this way is because the 83 has all of the stuff i wanted that the iroc didnt and i figure it would be easier to just swap a motor to one than a whole bunch of stuff to another, especially since the motor has to come out anyways. I also plan to save the Iroc for an LSx swap later down the road.

If the 83 was cfi you can reuse the tank just put in a high pressure pump. if not you will need the 86 tank. Complete drive train and harness changes at c100 and c201 in the harness. You can do a search for the years pinout of the connecters.

It was carbed so I'll need the tank, would you elaborate more about "Complete drive train and harness changes at c100 and c201 in the harness"

Re: 86 TPI into an 83 z-28

Leave the ENGINE and the HEADLIGHT harnesses from the 83 Z28 installed; AKA the C100 connectors on the drivers side of the engine bay. Those 2 harnesses are all that you will need in order to get any engine running in your car ( with all the gauges working ) & you will not have to alter any plugs.

If you try to use the 86 ENGINE harness with your 83 Dash harness then you will have 'problems' with Power Distribution and the wiper system ( at a minimum.)

The 1986 TPI ECM harness is practically a "stand alone" harness.

You will need to connect the 86 ECM harness to the Dash harness on the passenger side. Your also well advised to add a few extra fuses rather than trying to find existing wires to "tap" into. ( Crank/cold start , Injector Fuse 1 & Injector fuse 2.)

The Dash-to-ECM harness connector is called C207 ( and the 86 will have a small C221 ) You'll need to look at each wire on each side of the plugs to make sure they match each other and might need to move a few of them around so they line-up properly. You might also need to add a wire or 2 if it's missing.

Here are the pin-puts for the 82-83:

1982 (& 83?) C207

PIN Color From / To (Notes)
A Brn ALDL / ECM (AIR control)
B
C Wht Light Driver / ECM
D Tan Oil Pres / Gage (L4)
E Wht/Blk ALDL / ECM (test)
F Pnk/Blk IGN fuse / EGR-ECM
G Pnk/Blk Gge fuse / AC Comp Relay
H Tan/Blk ALDL / TCC-ECM
J
K* Brn ECM / VSS
K* Ppl Brake / TCC ( V6 )
L Org/Blk ECM / P/N switch ( V6 )
M Blk/Wht VSS,P/N switch / Grd
N Org/Blk ECM / P/N switch ( V8 )
P* Ppl Brake / TCC ( V8 )
P* Brn ECM / VSS

Here are the pin-outs for the 86:

1986 & 1987 C207 ( TPI )

PIN Color From / To (Notes)
A Brn ALDL / ECM (AIR control)
B Red ALDL / Fuel Relay ( TPI )
C Brn/Wht ECM / CE Light ( TPI )
D Tan/Wht Fuel Relay / Fuel Pump ( TPI )
E Wht/Blk ALDL / ECM (test)
F Pnk/Blk IGN fuse / EGR-ECM
G Pnk/Blk Gage Fuse / Burn Off Relay ( TPI )
H Tan/Blk ALDL / TCC-ECM
J Org ALDL / ECM ( TPI )
K Brn ECM / Speed Buffer
L Tan/Wht Fuel Relay / Fuel Pump ( L69 )
M Blk/Wht VSS,P/N switch / Grd
N Org/Blk ECM / P/N switch
P Ppl Brake / TCC
R Ppl/Wht Crank Fuse / Cold Start-ECM ( V6 )

Plug C221

A Pnk/Blk Inj2 Fuse / Even Fuel Injectors
B Lt Green Back Up Switch / BU Lights ( V6-T5 )
C Brn Fuel Pump-Fan Fuse / Fan Relay ( V6 - TPI )
D Pnk/Blk Inj1 Fuse / Odd Fuel Injectors
E
F Dk Blue Back Up Fuse / Back Up Switch ( V6-T5 )

Because your using an 85-87 TPI ECM Harness, the swap will be way less complicated than if you were trying to use a later TPI harness.

Re: 86 TPI into an 83 z-28

P.S.

If your tank is good than just re-use it after installing the proper sending unit. You'll also have to run a wire from the FP relay to the tank to power the pump.

If your tank is nad than look for a late thirdgen tank as a replacement,.. I think the 90-92 tanks (?) were all baffled fuel tanks while the early ones were not.

If your current carb style tank sending unit is good than put it in the classifieds here,.. they are pretty hard to locate in nice shape and it should help provide you with funds needed to buy the FI sending unit that you need to use.

Just a note - the EFI tanks have baffles that the carb tanks don't. Since you'll be dropping the tank anyway, you might as well drop both tanks and use the '86 tank (unless it has "issues").

Wish I could help you with pictures, but I used the carb'd tank (i.e., didn't follow my own advice - which is why I am giving you the advice I am).

Speaking for myself, no matter how much I read and how many pictures I saw, it didn't make much sense until I got into it and saw how it fit together for myself.
