another vortec 350 swap

Well I have been putting together a 96 vortec engine with a 91 TPI system in a 1986 Camaro. It's taking me about 3 years so far and I'm getting there. I'm going to set up a link with pictures if possible so you guys can check it out. Feedback Welcome

Re: another vortec 350 swap

I'll post a few details for now.

96 350 roller block vortec heads, GM hot cam kit (with the 1.6 roller rockers give me 530 cam lift), edlebrock base intake for vortec heads, arp main studs / rods / heads, moly rings, shorty hedman headers, adjustable fuel reg, 21 lbs venom injectors, and a 4l60e with a stand alone tci computer.

Re: another vortec 350 swap

Thanks. Did you guys see how I made that ac compressor fit by cutting that rear bolt mount off. I also had to cut the tranny tvs cable clip off the throttle shaft. But it's ok because I'm running a 4l60 and don't think I need it.

Yeah this is my second complete engine rebuild, I did everything except the machining off course. Probably cost just as much, but allowed me to check all my tolerances and things and just make sure everythings right.

Re: another vortec 350 swap

Just about done. A few more little things to button up and thats it. Anybody interested can check out the link I posted for new pictures. One thing I really need is the throttle bracket that goes on the plenum. Anyone got a spare one to sell me?

Saw one listed in the parts for sale section. Don't know if it's still available though.

Looks pretty sweet.

Did you have the heads and blocked milled? They looks shiny.

Re: another vortec 350 swap

Using the vortec serpentine set up with the tpi. I had to use a die grinder to cut off the bolt housing off on the compressor that was causing the interference between the throttle body and that corner of the compressor. And then I had to cut the corner off the serpentine bracket that caused interference between the thermostat water outlet and that part of the serpentine bracket. Also there is a vacuum port right under the throttle body that points right at the thermostat water outlet that might need to be bent a little for clearence. And I think I'm using the vortec intake thermostat water outlet that points the water outlet right between the ac compressor and fuel rail. It has a very low profile and I don't think any other water outlet would work.

I'll get some more pictures up of these modifications soon to try and give more understanding of what I'm trying to explain. I don't know about the hood clearence yet because I haven't got the engine in yet but it looks like it shouldn't be a problem.

Alls I can remember is he (machinist) said I had no coil bing and that the springs worked out perfect. But it is tight I know that. I think the springs say a max of 530 and the cam with the 1.6 rockers make 530 on the intake and exhaust.

Re: another vortec 350 swap

I suggest "you" take a second look at that. Also look at the pattern the rockers have on the valve stems.Valve train mods change the geo and often require adjustments like changing the push rod length.

Re: another vortec 350 swap

I've been watching your progress. I also removed the corner bolt on the compressor for throttle body clearance but I'm using a LT-1 throttle body. It gives you better clearance between the compressor and throttle linkage. I would double check the roller pattern on the valve stem also, just for a sanity check.

Re: another vortec 350 swap

Thanks for the recommendations. I planned on putting some dye on the valve stem tips and checking the wear pattern for grins.

Re: another vortec 350 swap

well I checked my wear pattern on the valve stems and found out it is a little off center. So I might end up having to change to a longer push rod like you guys were thinking.

Re: another vortec 350 swap

Has anyone had any clearence problems on the push rods contacting the holes on the vortec heads. My cam lift is only 530. It doesn't look like i'm going to have any rubbing.
