383 budget build
I want to get more power out of my 84z carb/T-5 trans. I just got a 350 from a friend(came out of a 89 suburban, tpi). Now I am looking into building the 350 up to an 383. I prefer carb(simpler to work on for me) I found a couple builds online. Just wondering if anyone has a simple breakdown of
What all is needed?
What you recommend I replace new?
Keep in mind that this is a budget build in the research phase....(as I just rebuild my suspension last wk/rebuild trans 6mo ago). My gold is around 400hp. Not a whole lot but enough to scratch an itch from time to time.
Thanks,
Kevin

'89 Suburban would be TBI, not TPI.
You can get 400 HP at the crank with a 350. But, a 383 would do it without having to breathe as hard.
About all you're going to use from the '89 350 in a 383 build will be the block. Possibly the rods. Have the block checked out before you spend any money - no sense paying for things you can't use, especially if they can't be returned (like machine work).
383 rotating assembly choices are plentiful. Pick one that will handle the power level you're shooting for. If you get crank/rods/pistons/rings/bearings, it can be delivered balanced, and you'll know you have all good stuff.
Heads - forget the '89 Suburban heads. Aftermarket heads are getting pretty affordable these days. For 400 HP, as set in the 180-190cc intake range should suffice.

Re: 383 budget build
The Bowtie Vortec heads run in the small port 180cc and lager port 220 and are priced right.Just gotta set your SCR with appropriate pistons and deck height to run pump gas.
Oh yeah-they are a 65cc chamber.
