305 Swap, Will not start
305 Swap, Will not start
I am putting this here because I believe it may have something to do with the swap, but I may be wrong. Anyways, I bought a 1989 Camaro RS today with a rebuilt and reworked 305 Vortec in it (carbureted). It originally had a V6. I test drove it and everything. Ran fine. So I go ahead and buy the car and get about 30 miles away from the town and pull into get some gas and it dies. We go to jump it and it starts up but as soon as I put it in drive it dies. So we get it off to the side and jump it again and nothing. It cranks and cranks but wouldn't fire. Finally I got it to run for a bit and go to take off and it dies. It did this 3 times before I decided to have a tow truck come and get it. I moved the distributor, I tried gas in the carb, just about everything you can do while on the side of the road. Heck, I even replaced the alternator with a spare I had brought. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? This is kind of supposed to be my daily driver.
Any info helps! Thanks

when buying a modded car you are at the mercy of who ever did the work.i see everything from complete hack jobs, where everything is wired with speaker wire.up to swaps that you cant even tell it was done. if you can read the codes .its the first place to start.

Sounds like a fuel problem. Do you have electronic carb or standard mechanical carb?
Could be stuck inlet needle valve in carb.
Plugged fuel filter.
Bad fuel pump.

Turns out the guy just ran a wire from the distributor to the hot side of the fuse box and it fell out while driving. Got it fixed and need to go through the wiring again.

well, all I can say is, good luck and happy hunting.who knows ,that may be the only "professional" wiring the PO did.
Re: 305 Swap, Will not start
Hopefully go through the wiring soon when I swap this engine for a 327 bored.40 over. Anyone know what a 305 bored .40 over with vortec heads, aluminum intake and edelbrock carb might be running for horse? It's runs good might just sell it. Thread
