305 to 350 Vortec swap help
305 to 350 Vortec swap help
Alright so I currently have a 91 RS with the stock 305 and stock 4 speed automatic transmission. But I also have recently acquired an 86 IROC with a running 350 Vortec motor and a 4L60E transmission.
I originally wanted to fix up the IROC and make it look good and drive that around, but after digging through it, I realized that I wouldput in way too much money. Plus the guy before me who installed the Vortec did a horrible job at putting it in, as there are wires EVERYWHERE. Starting fresh with the motor ideally would be a better way to go. So I figured if I swapped it into the 91, not only would it be going into a car that is way ore structurally sound and looks a lot better, but I would be saving money.
So my question is, how hard is this going to be and how much (ballpark) should something like this cost? I have basically every part in extras, so I shouldnt have to buy too much.
Any ideas and/or help would be great!
Thanks!

Does the '86 have the Vortec fuel injection and computer system? You said "4L60E" - are you sure about that? Not saying it isn't, just want to verify.
Most Vortec swaps don't use the Vortec EFI system. Mostly because it isn't very good. You really need to decide what induction system you're willing to use.
What does the '86 have for exhaust? I'm assuming your '91 is the stock system.

Re: 305 to 350 Vortec swap help
Yea it has the fuel injection system and yea it has the 4L60E transmission. It was pulled out of a '96 chevy pick up I believe. And the computer is not the original one. It is a modified racing computer from who knows where. I do have the original one as well though.
The exhaust on the '86 is a single piped system with a cutout up front, gutted cat, to a Flowmaster. The '91 is a stock exhaust to a Flowmaster as well
