Chevy 350 swap
I everybody! im currently swapping a Goodwrench 350 into an 83 v6 Camaro and I just have a few questions. I already read the swap threads and have been searching these forums for over a year now so please dont just skip over my post!
Okay so I currently have almost everything pulled off of my old 2.8, being an 83 it has a mechanical linkage for the clutch. Im having trouble removing the big main rod thats just under the intermediate shaft on the steering column. There is one bolt that seems to be holding it to the frame, Is this the only place other than the spring and the adjuster that I have to remove? It almost looks as though once I get that bolt out i can slide it off of the shaft on the motor.
Does anybody have any pointers on exactly where my lift points should be on the motor? on the passenger side there is a hook in the back that I can hook to, is this the only place I should hook to? I was thinking I could hook the chain there and on the power steering bracket and that would evenly distribute the load.
On my goodwrench 350 there are no lift points or hooks on the motor, is there anywhere I could hook up to without removing the intake? I would rather not replace whats already good if I do not have to. I was thinking maybe I could put some of the header bolts on and hook to that, but im worried that the pressure will be to great on my valve covers. Thoughts?
Now for the Motor mounts.. I was going to try to just remove the main bolt going through the mount without taking the springs out of the car, How difficult of a task is this? I was even considering using a cutting torch and cutting the clam shell on the motor itself. Thoughts? any help will be greatly appreciated! remember every time someone dies a library is burnt so please share you're knowledge!

Re: Chevy 350 swap
you can use one of these engine lift plates. it bolts where your carb goes on the intake.

i dont know if your 350 will bolt up to your tranny, probably have to change the bellhousing at least?
last time i put a v-8 where a v-6 was, i pulled the motor, then cut the frame mounts off. i mocked up the new ones, lowered the engine in place and welded them in.

You will need to change bell housing but the v6 Trans probably won't last very long. Might want to look into a 700r4 from a v8 3rd gen.
Also you can remove the bolt for the motor mount, not to hard just pick the motor up some and the bolt should come out. Once motor is out you can remove the mount on the k member.

Re: Chevy 350 swap
I have a v8 T-5 ready to go in its place, I have everything off of a v8 for the swap I was just wondering about the "how to". My 2.8 has to be out by tomorrow afternoon so I have a time crunch and cant wait for the adapter plate for the intake. I have heard of those before but I dont know if its just me but I would not trust that much tension on an aluminum intake.
would header exhaust ports be able to handle more stress than the intake side of the head?

Re: Chevy 350 swap
I have pulled and installed more engines that I can count. I always bolt my chains to the corner intake bolt holes or front head end acc. bolt holes.
If going to the intake holes, just leave intake on, pull the 2 or 4 bolts out use longer grade 8 bolts and large thick fender washers.
I got a few pics if you need them

Re: Chevy 350 swap
Oh and for the engine mounts. It's a pain but you can do it with out cutting or removing any suspension parts.
I have done many V6 to V8 swaps and never cut or welded anything, nor did I remove any springs, or other suspension parts.
I took an old 15mm wrench and bent an angle on it. Used it with socket, extensions and U joints to get at the bolts. It helps if you have a helper to hold the tops of bolts. If no helper then clamp a pair of vise grips to the top so they can rotate and but against something and not turn.
To get at the bottom nuts, I went in through the space between A arm and K member.
Use axle/wheel bearing grease to hold the nut in socket/wrench when putting them back in... Or JB weld you a small magnet into a socket to hold the nut.

i've got some bent wrenches like that too Night rider. sometimes in tight spots like that, i'll tie a thin string to the wrench incase it falls in there. i do agree, you don't need to take anything off to get to the nuts. i was just lazy.

Re: Chevy 350 swap
Thanks for the advice guys! I got the whole v6 drivetrain out this weekend, hopefully ill have enough time to swap the v8 in completely thanksgiving weekend! I have been taking pictures of absolutely everything I do to document my swap. by the end of it I want to post a thread of how to completely swap out a v6 for a v8 in one of our cars. I want to do this so if anyone is attempting the swap they know exactly whats involves. Hey who knows maybe it will even become a sticky! for now though keep the information coming!

Good job black83. I like the fact you want to 'give back' and post a how to thread after you are done.

Re: Chevy 350 swap
The fact that im rereading my posts from this weekend and finding a grammar mistake in almost every sentence just goes to show how much my nerves were worked up. In the future ill try to be sure to reread what I am writing so you guys do not have to read a sentence with multiple tenses in them.. haha.
quick question, I bought new Polyurethane mounts to drop in with my new 350, I know I read this somewhere but I can find where. which mount goes on the passenger side and which mount goes on the drivers side? I know one mount has a much longer part number on it, I just forget what mount goes on what side.
I cant wait to finally have a vehicle that has over 100 horsepower, and can get out of its own way haha.
