lo3 to lo5 swap
You guys may think, this is ridiculous but here's what I'm,looking at doing. I have an 89 Camaro, mostly stock lo3 305ci, 700r4, 2.73 gears.
At first I wanted to upgrade my lo3 305ci, but then I found out they make an lo5 which seems to be a 350 version with everything else the same.
If I do a motor swap I preferably want something that will bolt right in exactly with No modifications needed.
Is this a direct fit? It seems perfect, and just the amount of power I'm looking for. I will get a custom chip to go with it but not trying to make a race car, it's a daily driver.

Re: lo3 to lo5 swap
Yes it is more than a "direct fit". It is as close to ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL IN EVERY WAY as it can possibly be, yet still be something different.
All you need to get it to run right, is a 350 TB w injectors; a 350 knock sensor; and a 350 chip for the ECM. Wouldn't hurt however to upgrade the exhaust at the same time, given that the 305 coffee-stirrer exhaust ALREADY chokes the life out of a 305, and is surely EVEN LESS ADEQUATE for a 350.

Re: lo3 to lo5 swap
Thanks! I expected the computer and throttle body differences, it obviously uses more fuel. Will my fuel pump be adequate or do I just need a new pressure regulator?
Currently I have stock manifolds however they are the same manifolds for all stock 350s of that era.
Cat has been deleted, passed inspection no problem, and a flowmaster 80 series transverse.

Fuel pump is fine.
Pressure regulator is part of the TB.
Cat & muffler aren't part of the problem and therefore cat delete and Blowmaster do NOTHING to solve the problem.
The problem is, the coffee-stirrer-sized exhaust. Worst offender is the Y-pipe and I-pipe; too small for a 305. Next problem is the head pipes (the ones that hook to the manifolds); also too small for a 305. Problem with that is, the head pipe is the same size as the manifolds, meaning, to improve the head pipes, the manifolds gotta go too. Solution is, get rid of the ENTIRE 305 garbage, EVERY SINGLE PIECE from the heads to the bumper, and replace with a GOOD QUALITY set of headers (as opposed to, the cheeeeeeeeeeepest thing you can find that it's not illegal to print "headers" on the box) for a 350 in THIS SPECIFIC CHASSIS (NOT "universal"), such as for about a 88 350 TPI or something, which I HIGHLY recommend having ceramic coated; a good high-flow cat; and your choice of COMPLETE 3" cat-back (I personally prefer the Hooker one but there are others that are perfectly good too). You can install all of that yourself in a matter of minutes. Don't bother with muffler shops, "custom", "true duals", or any of the rest of the Friday night McDonalds parking lot monkey-spank you always hear about. Not only will none of that work any better, it will cost more than a set of headers, a cat, and a cat-back.

Re: lo3 to lo5 swap
I agree with everything sofa just said.
The L05 is a perfect drop in swap needing only slight changed to be made (he already posted those)
Our 1987 Suburban has the L05 350 TBI in it, with a 700r4. Great little engine. Has no trouble moving that 6,000 lbs beast. Our 'burb has around 260K miles on it and the only engine issuse with it has been...
Water pump started leaking 4 years ago
Power steering pump went out last year (not really engine related though)
Starter went out about 5 years ago...
Now the POS gov-lock rear end, that's another story all together. It's had 3 diff 8.5" 10 bolt gov lock rears in it due to gov lock breaking and taking out ring gear and what not. This past summer it broke again, but this time I swapped in a truck 12 bolt.
Sofa is dead on with the exhaust. Change all of it on your car. Headers all the way back. Stock is so choked up, so small it kills off the 305's power much less the 350's.
It aint odd to see 30+ hp gains from swapping out to headers, aftermarket Y pipe, cat back exhaust on these cars.
Oh.. I would look at your rear end/gear ratio. A 3.23 or 3.42 would really wake up that L05 and make whole car just feel so much faster.

Re: lo3 to lo5 swap
He's totally right I have a 85 z with a lg4 700r and a 3:23, I previously owned a 90' rs with a lo3 700r and 2:77 or something and the difference is night and day with no other mods.
