Re: Block id

V = flint
02 = Feb
27= 27th day
TDT = has 2 listings

1972, TDT, 307, 135 HP, 2bbl, used in C-10 & 1500 van & bus
1980, TDT, 350, a/t, L vin, LS9 RPO, 155 HP, 4bbl, used in C-20 & 25

The Partial VIN don't make scene
C = not sure, should be a 1 for chevy
8 = year 19X8
U = Lordstown, Ohio
172705 = last 6 digits of car vin

I was rather confused. I bought the engine as a short block from a yard in Fairmount. It's a chevy 350 4 bolt main, he told me it came out of a van

Re: Block id

The suffix code indicates it's from 1972 or 1980 which also uses a 13 digit VIN. The common 17 digit VIN wasn't used until 1981. Decoding the partial VIN on the block comes to mean.

C = Engine code but since it's a truck block, it could also be a body type in that old VIN style
8 = Last digit of model year which is probably going to be 1978
U = Assembly plant Lordstown OH
172705 = Sequential number usually starting at 100000

Best assumption, It's a 1970's block. If it has a 4" bore, it's probably a 350. If the casting number confirms it's a 4" bore block then that's what you have. The stamped numbers mean nothing since it's a bare block.

So, essentially, when I buy the internals for the block, I'll be buying for the 1970s. Thanks for all the help. If you need the casting number or anything like that to further identify it, I can get that.

Re: Block id

You can get the casting # and post it but I bet it's 3970010.

Yeah if it's a 350 just buy parts for a mid 70's, late 70's 350, if its a part store tell them a '78 c10 pickup truck
