350 vortec 305 starter wont bolt on! help!
so i took the 305 starter off of my 305 to use on my 350 ( yes ik the tooth size is differnt i am running the t5 and wont submit to the auto darkside im also aware the t5 will get turned into melted ice cream if drive hard to much) no need to lecture me on that stuff its just for some werid reason no matter what bolt i use from the 305 or 350 the bolt wont reach up to the starter and the other side does so i was wondering if it is safe to just put like a large pipe to act almost as a spacer or what should i do?

huh?
the starter should sit flush to the block, then the bolts just go thru the starter and into the holes in the block... i assume you put your stock flywheel (or a proper stock replacement) on the new engine, correct? if not, why not?

As nova said, the starter must match up with the flywheel/flexplate. There are 2 different size flywheel/flexplates. Usually described as 168 tooth (large) or 153 tooth (small, used on most 3rd gens). Not all blocks are drilled and tapped for both starters. I don't recall which is which, but 1 starter has the mounting bolts straight across from each other and the other combination has the starter mounting bolts diagonal from each other. You can't use a starter for a 168 tooth flywheel with a 153 tooth flywheel or vise versa.
You can not use any type of spacer, the starter must be tight to the block (shims are ok for alignment) and the knurled part of the bolt must be in the block for locating and anchoring the starter solidly. You will be in for lots of trouble if you do not follow proper mounting and alignment procedures. You'll tear up starters and flywheels if the gears do not mesh correctly.

ill get pictures if im not busy but yes i using the correct size flywheel and tooth size its more like this one bolt will go in and proper tighten on and the other bolt wont reach as the head of the bolts wont get anywhere close to the starter im using the shorter bolts off of the 305 i was thinking possible gunk dirt and grim could've built up in that hole and wont allow it to completely thread sorry if i explained this kinda wacky

there are different length starter bolts. get the correct length, don't use a spacer. the starter bolt has a specific shank to position the starter.

autozone, advance auto, napa, etc.
take your existing ones with and get ones that are a tad shorter/longer.

A rotor does not technically have to point at the #1 cylinder. This is more or less just common practice.
As long as that rotor points at the distributor cap terminal that has the #1 plug on it, it will work. Perhaps they had it right and you messed it up?
