383 build up

I have a L98 350, planning on going 383. Thinking about vortec heads,SD intake, hot cam. Would like to put a pro charger on in future. Anyone have a set up anything like this, if so how does it run? Any suggestions?

Mine is similar, minus the Vortech heads and supercharger, but I can tell you this combo has some nasty low end torque. It doesn't seem to want more than about 6000 rpm, but that keeps it together for awhile. Most people who have ridden in my car place it in the mid 13 second range with 2.73 gears which is of course ridiculous, but it is that torquey. In Feb. will have timeslips and prove them correct. Extremely streetable, but needs a 750 for sure to feed it and some good exhaust. Funny thing is that it gets about 20 mpg. Good luck!

For the money the Vortec heads and base will run you, you could get better heads that will allow your base to bolt up, and EGR function will be easier (won't have to plumb exhaust up to the intake).

Vortecs flow nicely as-is, but the expensive intake, lack of crossover passage, lift-limited springs, need for self-aligning rockers, and press-in rocker studs really turn me off to them.

Rebuild an fully port the heads you have, that is what I did. If you want to talk cheap that is it and I don't think it is that big a compromise on power at all. If you are putting a supercharger on later you will get back the best claims of aftermarket heads 0f 30-40 horsepower anyway.

Use 6" rods and forged pistons for sure !! Read my signature.... I run low 11's with 4.10 gearing and let me tell ya.... this motor is one nasty monster at top end !!!!

Bye the way... a TPI setup will choke this motor..... it gonna cost you a ton of cash to upgrade the TPI system !!

383 Buildup

I just put my 383 (89 IROC) on the road about one month ago. Stock 2 bolt 89 IROC block, Eagle 383 crank, reused stock rods (resized), Speed Pro Hyper Teflon Coated Pistons, Vortec heads - bowls blended, screw in studs, Manley valves, SDPC TPI Vortec Intake, Lingenfelter 74211 cam, TPIS valve springs, AS&M LTRs, Ported Plenum, 58 mm BBK Throttle Body, Cold air intake, Spohn SFCs, LCAs, & Torque Arm, rebuilt 700R-4 with 2600 stall Vigilante, stock 9 bolt BW 3.27 gear.

After about a dozen or so runs, my best to date is 12.59 @ 107.1 mph with a 1.71 60 ft time. The car is hooking great off the line. I'm having some shift point adjustment problems, but overall the car is running pretty good. I'm hoping for 12.4s @ 110 eventually.

If you're going to use the stock TPI I'd suggest using a cam with a little extra duration (if there won't be any piston to valve issues) to help make up for the TPI. Otherwise I'd think about upgrading the intake or having your current crank checked and reconditioned and use the money you would've spent on the stroker on a better intake and build a 355. Just my thoughts, either way, good luck with everything and post results.
