Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
Since I did a swap last spring I figured I'd toss up a thread incase it would help anyone else.
I started with a 1991 3.4/3400 turbo V6 Camaro. It already had a th350 trans (9inch tail) installed and had a mechanical to digital vss installed.
I also already had a walbro 255lph pump installed so fueling was not a problem.
I also had a aluminum radiator. So needless to say alot of the thing people change on a V6 to V8 swap, I didn't have to do.
But here is what I did do. I removed the old V6 motor mounts, I had to slightly move the front brake lines to make room for the new V8 motor mounts which bolted right up to the extra set of holes in the k member.
I also had to remove my old 3 inch exhaust and piping to make way for the new NA headers to fit in there. Before I had forward facing tube headers that then went into a s366 turbo and then 3 inch out down the pass side firewall and then tracked the same route as the stock exhaust did.
I had to add a holly fuel regulator that is designed for high pressure inlet and 5-20psi outlet. So I can retain the fuel injection pump and line. This was very easy as the regulator is a return style. Never had a issue maintaining pressure and I had roughly a 400-450 crank hp 385 sbc. 11.60 car in the 1/4 mile.
Also I retained the stock 7730 ecm running a $59 mask. The only things I have hooked up still is the wideband o2 sensor, simulated narrow band, intake air temp sensor, knock sensor, coolent temp sensor, oil pressure sensor. I did this just for datalogging and tuning purposes.
I did not have to rewire anything for the 7730 to work. But you do have to be sure to use the oil pressure sensor as well, if not the fuel pump will eventually be shut off.
As for the ignition. I have a msd 6al2 programmable. With a blaster coil and pro billet dizzy. All wired up seperetly from the ecm. I use a toggle switch to activate it. But the starter solenoid is still controlled by the key ignition.
I plan to add some more pics at a later date to show the certain area that were changed. Motor mounts..exe
It took me about 20 hrs in total from when I began to tear out the broken V6 engine till when the V8 ran. It was a pretty easy task and went smooth.
