70-76 350 to replace Lg4 in my 86 Iroc?

Hey guys,

I have an 86 IROC with lg4 and entire car in essentially original condition, except for an aftermarket 3" exhaust. I have been slowly replacing stock pieces to maintain driveability, but have been starting to debate about the right way to go for an eventual engine build or swap (LS VS Lg4 build-up VS 350...).

Obviously I'm looking for more power than what's available in my Lg4, and am also interested in maintaining generaly driveability. I'm not a racer, but would definitely like a bigger kick in the pants than what I'm getting now.

I've found someone locally (Province of Ontario, in Canada), who is clearing out an old 350 that he was going to put into an RV. I've only seen pics so far, but based on the sticky here, casting numbers (63970014) show it to be a 70-76 350, with possibility of 2 or 4 bolt main. Also has the following castings: T1 CONV 2.

Can anyone decode the second set of castings further than what's in the sticky on this site?

Pics show a complete unit with heads and carbs, but obviously would require a complete overhaul. I am not an experienced wrench, so would contract out the swap to my local shop (shout out to Bruno's Auto in Ottawa who has been great to me).

Couple of questions for you:

1) What kind of complications involved in dropping the 70-76 350 into the 86 Iroc? Real headache? Manageable?

2) Any specific issues I should be looking for if I decide to go have a look at this engine?

3) What kind of output can I expect from a stock 70s 350, relative to the 305 lg4?

4) If I've got to tear it down anyway (highly likely), what kind of upgrades would you recommend to maximize the butt-kick-ability, but maintain driveability? Heads? Cam? Pistons? Carbs? Headers? None or all of the above?

Anybody with experience dropping this engine into your 3rd Gen, please leave a post with your specs and impressions below.

Thanks fellas!
