Engine SwapEverything about swapping an engine into your Third Gen.....be it V6, V8, LTX/LSX, crate engine, etc. Pictures, questions, answers, and work logs.
What up guys, I am 19 years old with a '90 Camaro RS 305, 700R4 Tranny, Looking to swap out this 305 with another engine because this 305 has 0 power. I have a budget of around $2,000. Any ideas?? I was thinking of a built 350, something that will bolt on easy to that transmission. Any other ideas around this budget ? Please let me know!!
Welcome to TGO. Although your budget is doable for a basic 350 swap (going carb, not keeping TBI that is), it isn't enough to upgrade the other areas of the car that need attention. As anemic as the 305 is, the stock exhaust, brakes and chassis are equally in need of an upgrade. I would spend your money on those bottlenecks first. You can also do those upgrades one at a time and still have a dirveable car whereas a cheap engine swap usually leaves you with a sputtering, stumbling mess that barely has more power than you began with. Those other mods have to happen to support an engine swap so you might as well get the foundation set now.
I have the same anemic engine soon to come out. What I have done over the years is make it much more enjoyable by a few things that will go right over well with a 350 swap. #1 S10 torque converter- gave me 2300-2400 stall. #2. 3.73+Posi rear- biggest seat of pants addition.#3. Shift kit- huge seat of pants difference.#4- 14psi tbI spring and custom chip.#5-Exhaust- go with a 3in system and headers and y-pipe if you can. I Don't run headers but probably will on my 350. At least some bigger TPI manifolds. Don't drop $ on the 305 but these things will help it and help with a 350 swap later. You may be happy with the 305 and these changes it definitely waked mine up. Gorgeous car BTW. Good luck with it and stay in touch. Wealth of knowledge on this site and you can find the parts you need.
