350 swap
350 swap
I have a 91 RS camaro and plan on dropping a 350 in soon. I was just going to trick out an engine then drop it in my car all at once but now i think i want to just drop in a stock rebuilt 350 with some headers then would i ever have to take out the engine again to swap cam, heads, intake distributer.... or anything? Also i just want to make sure i can use my old intake manifold and TBI?..dont worry i will swap the knock sensor and module.
You have a 3.1l, correct? if you have 3.1l then NOTHING will swap over. in fact, correct me if i'm wrong, I don't even think most of stuff on 305 TBI will EFFECTIVELY go onto the 350.
Your best bet is to do some research on the board like you're doing, and look for a used low km 350 TPI engine from a wrecking yard with somet ype of warranty... or get one used out of the newspaper for cheap. that's your best bet. or you can get a 350 L98 block and buildup from there.
OR.... a more expensive route but less headaches and GOBS of performance would be a crate motor. They can be had for around $3 000 US, then you'll need a few things on top of that, remember you'll need to get an exhaust made for the car etc. all the little things.
Best to buy a trans with the engine if you can. I would go 700R4 Automatic with a shift kit, and if you have cash to throw around get a B&M Megashifter (these are sweet! Ratchet action it's cool as hell, i have one in my ride)... if you want to go manual it's going to be expensive, T56 out of a newer Camaro/Trans Am... which is pretty pricey.
Do a few months research on here or get some books from your local library... try and learn as much as you can. Decide what kind of power you want to make, what your budget is, what work you could possibly do yourself etc. Remember that it might even be cheaper to sell your car and get a Z28 instead with 350 TPI... but if you're in love with your car (most of us are) then i would work around that.
good luck whichever route you go
good to see you posting questions.

i just got a new 700R4 with shift kit and am installing a hurst shifter ,also i have a 305TBi not V6...so i m set there. i just found a good deal on a rebuilt 350 and want to know if myold intake and TBI will work? when i drop it in i will put headers with it, so i pretty much want to know if i will ever have to take out the engine again(mainly to swap cam). I plan on putting on AFR heads,454 TBI #90 injectors, Edelbrock TBI bored tofit 454, cam(have not descided yet for need to find one that will let me pass emmissions in CA)and definantly a custom burned prom. I will have most of that professionally installed but i just want to knowif it would be cheaper to have cam put in before egine is in car or is it not worth my effort?
what do you need to put a 305 TBI on a 350? bigger injectors. I just finished a project with my brother, we put a TBI system from a 350 van (don't know year) into his 81' Buick Regal. It's running rich because of the bigger injectors... so just, get the bigger injectors. ALL work is so much easier in an engine stand, you don't have to lean over a fender, fight wiring and other engine components, plus you get a full circle around the engine to do what you need to do. Plus not to mention the reduction is risk to damage the fenders or other body parts. And another thing, you said "rebuilt stock 350"... what is it from? 350s from different things make different power. there is no "regular 350", it all depends on what you want to put on it and most importantly, how much you have / willing to spend... you can make anywhere from 230 - 1000+ hp from a 350.... it just all depends on what you're willing to spend

Doing a cam swap out of the car is WAY easier....lot less effort.
just do your homework first. This board is a good start.
No major "special" tools are needed , but defininetly take your time if you are doin it (cam) yourself.....don't rush yourself...or you will regret it. Personally I just HATE doin things twice.
