1989 Trans Am 305 TPI To 350 Carb

Forgive me if this has been addressed on this forum already. I am trying to do this swap. I am having issues figuring out what wiring needs to stay and What needs to go. I understand all of the fuel injection and engine management stuff can go. I've watched many many YouTube videos but none of them actually explained very well if you actually remove the computer? does the computer need to stay to run coolant fans or do I just cut that out and manually add a temperature controlled fan system? all of the videos on the wiring in these things shows there is basically a passenger side and driver side harness but mine are all combined in the center. did all these people manually separate all these wires and are they different in '89 because most of the ones I have found are for around 86-88. what controls all the lighting and stuff like AC controls and heater and all the power seats and windows etc.. I'm fairly good mechanically and I can figure out I need to just run a wire to the new HEI distributor and Tack but I'm not sure about the 700R4. does that need any wiring to the computer or a simple mechanical kickdown adapter for the carb? I got the fuel system regulator is needed but as far as the fuel pump is that keyed on power through the computer? if I get rid of the computer how do you set up the power to the fuel pump? There are a lot of questions I cant find answers to while trying to figure out this swap.. Do I simply cut out the entire computer and computer harness and hard wire switched power for all accessories? If there are links to all that on here I would love to read them.. I dont find these answers on search. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks

I know how to get people to chime in....say a bunch of wrong stuff. lol.
When I do my swap I plan on leaving the ecm alone and in place. Not sure what all the ecm controls besides the tpi. I know it controls the one rad. fan, the sensor by thermostat. Just disconnect the wires from the TPI engine and the wires you don't use on the carb engine just tie them back. I don't like cutting wires. You will need to come up with something to connect the throttle/trans/cruise cables at carb. I think you also need to do something for the TCC lock up. I think this one will work. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-24502513 I plan on using a Monster trans kit. I will ask them to be sure. You will need a fuel regulator/gauge. Air cleaner/intake.

Thanks.. It just seems like there are a lot of details that are easy to miss. Thanks for the lockup part. I wasnt sure what to do with that. The ecm is one thing I am unsure what to do with. What else does it control? I was thinking of just bypassing it for the Fan control and putting in a temp sender activated one. But does the Trans, and 700R4, need the ECM at all to shift? or is it like an old 350 that manually shifts and the computer only control the lockup which that switch would control instead? The rest I can figure out.. Carb connection/kickdown/fuel pressure regulator..not gonna use the cruise.. Does teh ECM control that if I decide to put it back in? Also, I want to keep the AC and it seems there are connections to the ECM from that..do I need the ECM for teh AC? Like I said, every time I think just throw a carb and HEI on it I think of a hundred more things it will involve.. I'm an old school guy, 55... Havent done a swap where it originally had an old ecm, even OBD1, so keep that in mind.. ;-)

I must be right or someone would have corrected me.
Lets see how I do on the next mouth full.
You don't need the ecm for the shifting, you do need the tv cable hooked up at the carb linkage for shifting.
I'm keeping the a/c too. I think when you turn on the a/c the ecm turns on the rad fan.
I don't know if the ecm has anything to do with the cruise and I'm keeping that.
I'm old school too. But I got you beat. 63.

Damn...I thought I was old! ;-) Thanks again for the input.. Now I remember that about the AC and the ECM just turning on the fan.
I dont think it controls the AC itself.. If I have the temp controlled fans I assume they will be on as needed anyway? Let me know how the Cruise goes for you. I'm saving the parts...
I think you may have given me the push over the edge to just do it.. I already have engine out. Just fiddling around with wires now trying to decide what to keep and what can go..
Have you found most of teh driver side Harness controls the lights, and horn etc? Nothing coming from the ECM harness need for that stuff?
Cheers to old school.. I was mainly an Outboard Engine guy, but really havent been in the wrenching business since about 1995...
Now you can start with all the misinfo to get lots of responses now that we got the majority of correct stuff. ;-)
