79 camaro 350 v8 swap 87iroc
I have a 350 out of 79 camaro and what i was wondering if it would drop in to my 87 iroc my iroc right now has a 305 lg4 (carb)
I dont think there would be a problem the difference i can see is the dipstick on the 79 is on the driver side and the lg4 motor is on the passenger side.Any info would be great......

I'm just putting a 1977 Camaro 350 into my 1991 RS. It will bolt straight in. The 350 was an auto so I have had to get an early 153 tooth flywheel to bolt up to the early (pre one piece rear oil seal) crank. I will also need a new starter motor to cope with the different tooth pattern. Is yours an auto? Your flexplate/flywheel will not fit your crank. There is a posting somewhere that gives part numbers for the correct flywheel.
Good luck! Keep us informed please!!

The dipstick is a little bit of a problem, since it won't clear the 3rd gen exhaust manifolds without some hefty bending, and the 2nd gen manifolds won't fit in the '87 chassis. Headers should solve that problem. I thought the dipstick move occurred in '79 (had a '79 Caprice w/305, dipstick was on pass. side). Perhaps that wasn't universal.
Also, the older engines used a two-piece rear main seal design, and the flexplates are different between the two types. A 153-tooth flexplate from an '82-'85 3rd gen will get the job done (your '87 piece won't fit). Also, the intake manifold bolts are at a different angle on your '87 engine (center two on each side) than the older engine, either an aftermarket manifold or elongation of those bolt holes in the intake will fix that issue.
Other than that, it should pretty much bolt in.
