A 4th gen. question about engine
A 4th gen. question about engine
I have a 1989 Camaro, but in the summer, I plan to purchase a 4th generation Camaro.
I have a question about replacing an engine on a 4th gen.
How do you take the engine out? A friend of mine heard that the engine has to be removed from underneath the car (since the 4th gen. Camaro's engine bay opening is so small).
Since the engine faces north-south, can't the engine be turned east-west and then be removed?

Car: '89 Firebird
Engine: 7.0L
Transmission: T56
Some people remove it through the bottom. But more often then not it will be removed through the top. This can be done with lifting aids such as those sold by TPIS. Check out their website and you'll see a nifty device for pulling an LT1 from a 4th gen.

All that I have done have been donor cars, so we just pulled the cradle out the bottom. You have to unhook tranny lines, brake lines, and harness, and other stuff, but... if you're removing the tranny too, I feel the out-the-bottom method works best.
The happy Hooker by TPIS is okay too, but you still have to remove the radiator for clearance, fans... it's 6 of one & half dozen of the other IMHO.
