New exhaust system

I need to get a new exhaust system for my 350 iroc. It scrapes the ground too often, and is way too loud.

The current exhaust system consists of :
# Flowtech 11102 1.5" headers
# Some custom Y-pipe that keeps hitting the ground. Its bent wrongly in places so it doesn't sit high up where it should.
# small silencer of some sort - about 5" dia. 18" long.
# 3" piping to the rear, where the pipes bang of the heat shield when going over speedbumps.

I've just spent 1,700quid on other bits and lost my job, so I don't want to go overboard..... but also don't want rubbish, because I will never sell this car, I might as well get parts that last.

Also the engine is currently a fairly stock 1979 350 which I'd reckon is only 240hp at most.

What I have found out thus far is that the matching flowtech y-pipe is actually more of a T-pipe and ain't worth buying.

Can somebody recomend an exhaust supplier in the uk (prefferably scotland) that could make me a system for my car?

Cheers,

Si. :lala:

Try Alexander Autos in Glasgow 0141-429-6416. They make custom exhausts but I have the feeling their tube bender is only good for 2 1/2 inces or something.

Gordon showed me some SS pipe he got from an exhaust place. fairly good quality stuff, but that stuff is heavy.

Sorry for the short answer, but it's 12.30 and I suppose I should get ready to goto the office so there's time to get something done before I leave at 4.

Exhaust and Header answer.

Hi there,i think you will find that the flowtech y pipe goes with the flowtech headers,so unless you stick with it you may have to change your headers as` well, the Headman headers and Y pipe is a good setup the headers being 1 5/8" with a true Y pipe.As for the rest of the system go with a Dynomax 3" system with the American thunder Box,all the tubing is aluminised and very good Quality,Obtainable in the uk for under 200 quid,By the way the headman y pipe tucks very nice up under the car in much the same location as the standard one does.

Where in the uk does headman header and y pipe cheapest? Usauto have quoted me 450quid! And about 300quid for the cat back system (see below)

Borla 3" adjustable system - dual round tips each side £497.50
Quick-Time engineering electric adjuster kit ** £150.00
** This is a motorized kit for adjusting the bypass feature "on the fly"

Flowmaster Force II, aluminized - single outlet on left side £312.23
Flowmaster American thunder, aluminized - single outlets each side
£415.15

Dynomax Ultra-Flow, aluminized pipes + stainless muffler - single
outlets each side £303.43 Dynomax Super-Flow, aluminized - single outlet
on left side £288.81

This is turning out to be a bit more expensive than I first thought.... I need to get in touch with some local custom exhaust people I think, especially as the hangers will need to be replaced as well.

Dear iroc si, those prices seem pretty steep to me,im pretty sure a mate of mine had a system about 18 months ago and im sure it was about 200 quid,it was a single 3" outlet.Try Lee at LA Racing, none of my paperwork is handy at the moment so i cant unfortunately give you his number, but he advertises everywhere!I may have a Y pipe and set of headers that i may sell, but i wont know for 2 or 3 weeks.Real steel are the best bet for headers, again try Lee at LA for the whole lot. What about if you got your headers and Y pipe,or use yours to keep costs down, and got some bends from Demon Tweeks, and some slip joints, got an edelbrock 3" box(which are superb quality),and prefabricated your own system,Edelbrock even do the dual outlet box, although the single is better from a performance view, and would be alot easier to fit,if you can weld then use the Headman bolt together flanges(although i do believe they do slip joint ones now),as when you come do bolt everything together they are a breeze to work with, and come apart a whole lot easier than a corroded slip joint.Demon Tweeks do two styles of bends mind, they do mandrel bent bends, which are perfectly uniform,or they do the cheaper ones which are still fine, and they do all angles.Have a look and see.

I'll look up LA racing and see what they have to say.

My main problem is the Y-pipe, as it has been made very badly and sits way too low in 3 separate places. I either need to get new headers and y-pipe combination, or get a custome y-pipe made as I refuse to buy the flowtech one due to its design.

I've been thinking about fabricating the rest of the system myself by getting the various bitz, but the y-pipe is the main problem as I don't think I can do that myself.

I think I've come to a decision about this exhaust.... In that I've just leave it as it is (but change the silencer) and wait until it gets destroyed on a road/speedbump.

In the meantime, what I've found out if anyone's interested....:
# Demon tweak's pre-bent pipe is at stupid prices.
# US auto's exhaust systems are crazy prices.... 500quid for a $400 system!!!! Perhaps they got the exchange rate the wrong way round.....
# There's a huge variation in prices. Borla system from summit for $736, $400 from Spohn & thunderracing.

If I do replace the system then I kept getting dragged towards going for cermaic coated SLP30005C headers, and the borla 14888 system for the rear, and tag in a small section to connect them together, with a glasspack bullet silencer where the cat was.
