Propane conversions

With gasoline prices going up, it's likely that more people are considering conversion to propane. I've found one TPI conversion article here on TGO that is several years old, but am looking for any more recent 3rd Gen propane conversions. Anyone in the European Region driving a TPI or carbed propane?

even with it being half price it's still not a huge savings to convert the motor straight over. Burns it 30% faster, and 20% less power, pretty hard to justify a $1000 conversion sometimes.

However if you built the motor for purely propane use, i'd see it. In fact I want to do this in the future, use larger induction sorta thing, bump up the CR, and go to town. I was thinking a dual mixer setup with a blower or turbo. Look into what the 4x4's are doing, they like it since the angle they drive on won't drain a float bowl in a propane powered vehicle, and it's not terribly specific to vehicle anyway.

$6 a gallon for gas? People are already paying that, you're getting off easy where you are, suck it up and enjoy the gas.

Over here gas is about $6 per gallon (We have the worlds most expensive gasoline)

I saw an 87 TA with propane conversion to a tpi engine. There are many propane modified engines over here although they are done to mostly non-performance 4 or 6 clyinder engines. I wouldn't recommend converting a v8 engine. If you want good mileage you should buy a more economical car. You should also look into Natural gas conversion. It's growing to be a popular system here and it's cheaper than propane and puts less stress on the engine.

There are a few around, one of the guys at the Pontiac Owners Club had one.
Its still not really caught on that much, i'm a mechanic, and hardly ever see any, even on your regular cars.

Thanks all, appreciate the responses. In regards to mileage, I'm very pleased to be getting 20mpg around town on my TPI, so my effort to gather info about propane conversion is for when gasoline becomes unavailable at an affordable price.

<<K-O>> -- any input regarding "natural gas" vs propane use? Does it use the same hardware?

Personally I don't recommend any of them since they are more volatile than gasoline so you can't park your car in closed spaces and If the hardware is installed Incorrectly It can easily cause a leak and blow up the car.

The main reason for using CNG and LPG is European governments support using these systems and they cut their LPG and CNG prices much more than gas to lower general gas consumption. You already have cheap gas over there, your gas prices are even lower that our LPG prices

I don't think they use the same hardware they sell different kits for CNG and LPG here. Check out this document it gives detailed Information about these systems ;

http://www.pugetsoundcleancities.org...sion_facts.pdf

also search for CNG conversion kits you'll find many sites that will give detailed information about the process.
