headers?

I was looking for headers and i dont have much money now, im doing interior mods now, and thinking about buying a thunderbird super coupe, i have the stock exhaust manifolds on my car now, no cat, and 3 cat back, my 305 is built, 10-1 comp, 467 lift cam, 222* duration, summit polished manifold, carter 4 barrell, msd multiple spark discharger, 48000 volt coil, how much would headers help, hp and et wise? would these work with my existing y pipe http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...br=76&lastcat= or could i rig them some how, i am very bad with exhaust so.. thanks for any help

Anytime you get headers you need a new y-pipe. I'd say look into Hooker headers they're cheap and I believe Flowtech sells them cheap.

you dont necessarily need a new y-pipe, but the stock one may have to be modified, ie bent slightly, etc. thats what i got done when i got some flowtech shorties put one. my mechanic bent it slightly in a few spots. however, the stock y-pipe is very restrictive and a good 3" mandrel bent one would be a good investment if you are going to get headers. with the flowtech headers, keep in mind they have small 1.5" primaries. they dont flow real well and if you ever get a bigger engine than your 305 they will be too restrictive. it looks like you have a real decent cam there for 305, so i would think those flowtechs would too restrictive. get some headers with at least 1 5/8" primaries. these will help you out more, plus they would work on a 350 if you ever get one.

i hope this helps

I wasn't aware it could be bent, but like said the stock y-pipe is very restrictive.

Honestly I would rather not say, for one the tranny slips bad on the 1-2 shift which is holding me back a lot (it's actually .2 quicker letting off the gas and shifting to cause a firmer shift), also I mismatched my cam to my gears. But once I can get a new cam in, it should be at low-low 14s.

i have a 350 in the garage, had it in my car, the 305 would of run with it, i had to take the 350 out because of oil pressure, i posted it on here before, how much would a descent set of headers run me, my dad says to not go with headers, and that they burn plug wires, you have to tighten them once a week and they dont give you that much power, is this true? thanks

yeah theres not much difference between the 305 tpi and the 350 tpi. A 305 tpi 5 speed can keep up with a 350 tpi auto I think... I could roll with the 350 tpi if I had headers and a catback.

they will definetly free up some power, especially with the mods you already have. as for burned plug wires, if you dont take the time to route them away from the headers so that they are not sitting on the headers, yes they will burn. invest in some good wires (MSD super condcuter 8.5 mm) some wire looms and wire seperators and you will be fine. get some good dead soft aluminum gaskets and chances of leaks will be greatly reduced, plus the gaskets are reusable. yes you do have to tighten the header bolts often when you first get them, but it is worth it.

I have been told that if you get stage 8 header bolts that they have some kind of clip or something that keeps them from backing out so you dont have those problems.

What size headers are best for a 305 TPI. 1 5/8 or 1 3/4. SLP rercommends 1 5/8 for 305 TPI. I am just wondering what u guys use

I wouldn't call the stock y-pipe a y-pipe... it's more of a T-pipe... I wouldn't wish that horrid thing on any car... I plan to get a real y-pipe with my headers... I suggest to anyone that they get a real y-pipe...
