Ideally yeah 3", but I think his question was at what point does this sized exhaust become a restriction.

The answer to that I can't say. I mean, it won't stop making more power as you make upgrades to things, but, before too long you would see more power from larger pipes. Its kind of like asking how much HP can you make on the stock TBI. You can keep sucking more and more air through it to support a more powerful motor, but you'd likely see a benefit from having something else on top. (even just a bigger TBI)

Actually, thats almost the same exhaust I'll have after the rest gets put on (Headman shorties+Y pipe, cat is coming off, 80 series 2.5 in dual 2.5 out) I don't really plan on taking it very far as far as modifications go so I figured I'd save the $$ and not go 3" ($400 for a 3 in. cat back, 267 for the 2.5, installed)

i had planned on a 2.5 inch y pipe which i got a price on of 100$ bucks but i drove to two different exhaust places with open headers and they said they could only do 2.5 inch so i got it...plus i had the intermediate pipe replaced and a flowmaster installed not long ago...if i decide to go 3'' im gonna get a set of edelbrock headers with the 3'' y pipe and run 3'' pipe to a hooker muffler or flowmaster...sucks to have wasted the money on what i have now tho

I wouldn't say wasted $$. I'd do everything you had planned and then upgrade the exhaust after. Heck Camrs89 is running a circle track motor on the same exhaust we have. Sure its not making 100% of what it could at WOT but its still powerful as kcuf. A guy I know also has an 85 TA with a vortec 355 and its running on the STOCK cat back! Yeah its hurtin power but its still got plenty.
