Question about my cat

HI everyone, I have edelbrock headers and edelbrock 3inch catback with a gutted cat. I hear alot of people saying that you lose performance with a gutted cat. I also hear some people say you can just put a pipe in the cat so the exhaust doesn't just float around in the cat. No my question is what kind of pipe and what size do you use? Is it metal or do you use something like PVC tubing? It would probably be better to just take the cat out and install a piece of exhaust tube, but I don't want to make anything permanent as I might change the catback later. Thanks everyone for any help.

PVC? That would result in a melted blob in about 2 minutes or less.

This cat-gutting stuff is so ghetto, I doubt anyone has any real data to back up or refute its benefits or harm. In order to fit a piece of pipe in a gutted cat, the OD would have to be slightly smaller than the ID of the gut, so you're going to have a little more restriction with the pipe in there than you would without a pipe. The "floating around" stuff is dubious.

If you don't want the "restriction" of a cat, put a piece of exhaust pipe in its place. If you need a cat for emissions purposes, put in a high flow version and leave the poor thing alone. The difference in performance between the two would be slightly less than the normal day-to-day atmospheric variation effect.
