selecting an exhaust/headers

hey, i just bought an 88 iroc which has been my dream for years....first thing i wanna do is put in headers and new exhaust...what exhaust should i get to give me a lot of hp and a lot of throaty power sound? money isnt much of a concern as long as its not outrageous. Also, i wanna get headers, which would be the best to get? (im lookin into edelbrock)..i just need some advice from whomever wants to offer it...also, if i dont have much equipment or knowledge, could i possibly put in this stuff myself or is that crazy? and in the case that i cant? where do i bring it to have it done...i obviously know very little about anything
- also, i actually dont know if i aready have an aftermarket exhuast...how could i tell if i do or not?
thanks a lot

you can tell if you have aftermarket exhaust by looking at the muffler for some brand or part number. If you want to stay with the smog stuff than any of the popular brand that offer a y-pipe to match would be fine. If you have any experience working on a car than there should be no problem doing this install. I got the heddmans and y - pipe, with no smog and it sounds good and has much more power. If you're gonna keep the cat be sure to replace it with a new hi flow type and run a 3'' pipe from the cat to the muffler. If you want a throaty exhaust note that sounds like headers and cam than get a Magna Flo or Dynomax, if you want the exhaust to sound like your run of the mill V8 with exhaust get a Flowmaster but you will sound just the same as Trucks, Pustangs and anything else you can always tell if a guys got "Flows" but there are other much better mufflers out there.

Hooker headers with either Hooker cat-back or Flowmaster. Sound clip of the Hooker cat-back is in my sig.

Congrats on the new car.

I would go with hooker supercomp ceramic coated headers, no cat, and the hooker catback. This setup will sound pretty mean. As for the edelbrock headers, I wouldn't reccomend those, they don't flow nearly as well as the hookers. Like pontiacz28 said, if you have experience working on cars, the install should be no problem.
