Custom Exhaust...

I have been thinking about getting custom exhaust put on my car, but I'm not sure how well it would flow, so I figgered I'd put some stuff on here and ask. I'd start with new headers, not sure what yet. I know a lot of kits on summit come with a new y-pipe for our application, too, and I'd be making use of it. After the headers, I was planning on having my exhaust guy cut the new y-pipe apart before it joined to one pipe, then running new pipes over where the cat's supposed to be, side by side, towards the back of the car. Mufflers would be in that spot, staggered so they'll fit, and the exhaust wouldn't go up over the axle. Just stop right before. Would that flow decent at all? Or am I wasting time planning it? I'm willing to spend the money for mandril bent if I need to.
