Header coating

I've just got a quick question about the black coating that came on the Hedman headers i'm about to install. The stuff would scrape off with my fingernail,so i decided it probably won't last 5 minutes once i start the car.I sanding the stuff off and shot them with some 1200 degree heat paint .I've used the same type of paint on manifolds and it lasted great. Was it the wise thing to do,or should i have left them alone.

It was a good idea to do, otherwise they would rust pretty quickly. With this stuff they shouldn't rust much if any.
