Hollow sound
Hollow sound
I was watching "Gone in Sixty Seconds" the other day and there is a scene where he pulls up to a stop light in the GT 500 and you can here the car at idle. Granted this is most likely a sound bite and not the car, how would you make a car sound so hollow like that. Like the pipes were way too big. I know a tall cam will give it a lopey idle but I love that hollow sound. Any ideas?

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM 67 Gt-500.... Reminds me of my 67stang. Oh the heavinly gods have spoken:hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: :hail:
Come on guys. Let's not get distracted by the pretty cars
. I would cut off body parts for any 65-70 fastback mustang. Sorry but any mustang made after 1971 is UGLY!!!!!!. Got to be a fast back though. So how do I make that sound??

Put a high compression motor with no emissions, high lift, long duration camshaft, large port heads, single plane manifold, with large tuned length headers. The hollow sound you are referring to is actually the motor. Not the exhaust. No exhaust in the world will make your car sound like that, unless you have the motor to back it up.
probably flowbasterds... the car is modded out...its not a true stock gt 500... unless they came from the factory with billet grill inserts and that hood is unique... some company just bought the rights to the hood design and is now making a glass hood for classic mustangs...

Actually out of the 13 "GT500" made for that movie, the only TRUE GT-500 was given to Jerry Bruckheimer and made to look like the movie car "Eleanor". Either way, I'd take a Replica GT500 Eleanor any day of the week. Simply Beautiful.
A quote from a movie site. http://www.thecarsource.com
Q: Were any GT 500's damaged in the production of the new film?
A: "No. According to the July issue of Car and Driver ( "Gone Again"), Jerry Bruckheimer retained one authentic GT 500, outfitted to resemble the movie's Eleanor, for his own use. The other twelve vehicles were customized 1967/68 Mustangs. One was chopped up for camera work. Two were destroyed for The Jump along with others for the scene at Calitri's wrecking yard. Seven Eleanors survived. Some were modified for high-speed driving, others for sharp turns. Engines ranged from stock 289 to crated 351's. Keep in mind the actual GT 500 used the Ford big-block 428 cid mill which produced an advertised 355 horsepower. The "350" and "500" model designations were numbers chosen almost at random by Carroll Shelby and bore no relation to engine displacement or power."- Tom Cotrel "The Unofficial Fan's Web site" for the original movie

Not a bad car but the first Gone in 60 seconds had a better case seen. Somehting like 45 min!!
The other way that you could start to come close to a hollow sound is make the last foot of the tail pipe about 1" bigger. I think it would work better if the muffler was a little farther back, But you can only deal with what you have. Like I said it is a start, it will NOT sound like the stang.

what are we talkin about, we all wana be mustang's!... its gotten so bad, that i joined stangnet.com!! ahhh i dont know what to do!!...hehehe i joined for different reasons...i wana find out about a kid in my school. i wana see what hes got in his stang. he wont tell me. but his exhaust sounds loud. he deff. has full back exhaust, maybe a cam, intake with a CAI.. but the car looks like sh-it... purple with a cobra R/Camaro SS hybrid hood, and it has a double decker rice wing... and euro lights.... all clear... claims to have a 13 sec car. i dont think so... 14's ok... but not 13's. i want a 12 sec car, so i could kill him... ahh dam, i wish money would grow on trees... anyway, u wana make ur exhaust loud, get a resenator tube from SLP, or whoever, and place it in ur I-pipe, and have just duals from the resenator back, that would be basicly what SLP's loud mouth exhaust for third gens.

You care to come to NC and face my buddy's 1989 Mustang LX 5.0 5 spd? Vortec Supercharger...GT-40 Aluminum heads ported and polished, Edelbrock upper and lower intake, 30 lb. injectors, full length headers, 3 inch exhaust with Hooker mufflers, an X-303 cam, 1.65 roller rockers, and 3.55 gears?
Should be running high 10s or lower on street tires...hasn't taken it to the track yet.
The point im trying to make is: There is always somebody out there faster and better than you. The Ford vs. Chevy bull**** is stupid because there are plenty of Ford's who kick plenty of Chevy's asses, and vice versa.

im not arguin any more, so your thread is safe.
as for the exaust, thought you wanted a system like that honda?
it would give you that culvert sound and look.
any, you will have to do what LarsZ28 said and build your motor up. if you want a good sounding exhaust, 2 3\4 in duals would sound good.

that good hollow sound is pretty much all cam long duration and tall lift.
the exhaust eleanor is probably just headers into the side exhaust pipes. unless there is glasspacks in there.
if you want that real hollow throaty sound
get a good hot cam. and solid open exhaust.
your not gonna get that sound and be emissions legal
but yeah... its all engine

We've never heard of emissions testing here in rural IL. No problem there. From what I can see that car has side pipes that a hidden by side skirts (look at the pic, pipes exit just before the rear wheels). Cam is gonna do it all I suppose. I saw a 5.0 late 80s mustang the other day that looked pretty stock and it had a sweet gurgle sound to it. I loved it.

ford motors usually have that gurgl you talk about because of the way the engin is desighned. anyone know what compression a stock 5.0 stang has? that may have somthing to do with it.

i need to find a state near by that does not test for emissions/ or atleast no visual check! i wana take my AIR tube stuff off...will save me some cash on headers, and it will make my bay a little cleaner.... ahh... i also would like to have an awsome sounding exhaust, just not like a mustang....
if somone could make a loudmouth system for 3rd gens... it would be bangin!... peace
