Ground clearance??

Ok, I called a local shop to inquire about dual exhaust. They quoted me $180 at the worst to run it, but they said it would have to be under the rear axle. The price sounds right to me, but what about ground clearence? Anybody have that type of setup?
Also, I am wanting to get the dead soft gaskets for the headers and collectors. Does an 84 305 have square or round ports? The headers are hedmen, if that makes any difference.

OK, since no one else jumped on this, I'll give you my (really!) humble opinion. I think running it under the axle sounds like taking the easy way out because someone doesn't want to bend two pipes over the axle. Sure, it can be done cheaper, but cheaper isn't always better, especially when it creates trouble. You've figured out by now that I wouldn't do it, but I'm a stickler for trouble free driveability. One car that I could barely get over a speed bump or up a steep driveway was plenty. If you aren't trying to run huge pipe, I'm sure that carefully bent duals can go over the axle. Are there other shops in your area? Just a thought. It's your car, do what's good for you. Hope this helps.

It is going to be very difficult for anyone to run large pipe over the rear on a 3rd gen. If you really need it, have it done, if not just run a single 3 over the axle and run a crossflow muffler, that will support about 350hp. The dead soft aluminum work well, you will need the round ones for those headers.

$180 sounds really cheap to me. I couldn't even find a shop to do mine. As for the ground clearance, there won't be much but if it's done right you can have it high enough where you can get around comfortably w/o scraping.

I would tell you not to waste your time and efforts making a dual exhaust work well on a third gen ,I tried it and hated the ground clearance issues ended up with long tubes a custom dual 3"
y pipe into a single 3" flowmaster .
It sounds great and only gives up 2 tenths of a second over uncapped on my 10 second camaro. 10.60 @ 128 /10.78 @ 126

87_TA - is there a pic of your car and motor anywhere on the net? From you sig., looks like a pretty killer setup!

Anyways, back to exhaust. If you must run duals, DO run it over the rear axle. Also, run 2 1/2 in pipe. 3in dual exhaust would be overkill and hurt performance unless you're running a motor that needs it (ex. 600+HP small block with nitrous). Also, 2 1/2 in pipe will give you more ground clearance and when the exhaust shop bends it, it wont be NEAR as crinkled as 3in would be. But, if you have to have 3in duals, you can always run the NASCAR style 3in ovalized pipe. Just my $.02
