converting from dual cat to single cat

If I were to change the cat setup on my 91 Z28 from dual cats to a single cat would I fail emissions?

You would fail the visual check, if the tech's book says you're supposed to have dual cats and you only have one. Otherwise the emissions out the tailpipe should be the same.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to do that? Granted, when replacing your cats, if you have two of them it is more expensive. But on the other hand, dual cats look cool, they produce more power, they probably make a little bit of a clearer sound because of the better flow, and it helps with emissions. For people that say dual cats dont help with emissions, I disagree. Maybe on a stock motor it wont matter much if you have one or two, but if you upgrade to a ZZ4 for example, then you have one cat cleaning the emissions for each side of the block. Personally, I'd keep the dual cats.

It was just a question for future reference. I will probably just keep the dual cats though.

I have another question. How long do cats usually last? And since half the airflow will be going through each cat will dual cats last longer than a single cat?
