Learning Exhaust

I am new to Cars, i have little knowledge about cars... I purchased a 1989 Gta Trans with a 5.7l
I know this much, i want Headers a y pipe and the rest.
Now help me out because i dont know much.
Mufflex is coming out with a 4" dual tip package they're fabricating it now and will be ready to ship within the next couple of weeks. If i have the money to spend and i know im going to build up past 400 hp is it worth it? Then what headers do i go with? and what y pipe? Do i get borla headers or save myself 400 and buy hooker super comps? What is the Difference ? and whats the difference between cat back and normal exhaust? what about y pipe who makes good y pipes? Please lend me a hand as i said i am fairly new to this and want only the best most funtctional and highest hp adders for my Gta she's my baby

U want to make it have 400 HP. U need to get going on the mods u can do yourself. U will need new heads, cam, gears, and transmission mods, like a Shift Kit and Corvette Servo. As for exhaust, I can tell u to go with SLP 1 3/4 Headers and probably a Flowmaster muffler depending on what u want.

cat back means new tubing starting from the catalytic converter (a RESTRICTIVE emmissions piece) going to the muffler and tail pipes. I personally am going with hooker super comps but i hear good things about slp. a lot of people will say get 1 3/4 but a lot of other people will also say that 1 5/8 are plenty. you can take 1 5/8 headers well into the 400 hp range. the hooker super comps should come with a y-pipe. if you have the cash get your headers ceramic coated. this will beautify them and protect your investment from rust and various other types of corrosion. start reading up on this site to learn about engine mods to get into that 400hp range. cam, heads, intake, exhaust, roller rockers, etc. invest in a hi flow cat (catco or random technology) good luck
