What exactly do I need?

Ok, I have an '86 T/A. The previous owner tells me it has a 350 rather then the 305 it came stock with. She says it's an 83 block. This winter I'm looking at getting a cat-back system. Probably flowmaster. First, does it matter if it's a 350/305? Will this replace the cat? If no, what size cat inlet/outlet do I need? Ofsets? I'd prefer a 3-inch system, but I've never done this before, so I have no idea what I need/what is a good idea.

first, no, it doesnt matter if it is a 305 or a 350.
second, a cat back does not replace the cat. i would suggest going with a high flow replacement cat like a random technology piece.
third, my flowmaster cat back its a 3 inch single pipe to the muffler, and then 2 and a half duals out the muffler. so just order a 3 inch replacement cat and it should work.
good luck

How big is the inlet to the cat? Also, what kind of muffler do you have? Is the inlet off set? Do you have pictures? Thanks.

The freest flowing cat-backs aren't worth much if the stock cat doesn't flow. A good aftermarket free-flowing cat is the best first step in a street-legal hi perf exhaust.

i agree with these guys. but hte stock cat intle on your car should be either 2.25 or 2.5 depending on what your original engine was. 305 tpi or tbi. i would replace the cat. catco makes one for around 100 random techs is 180ish. when you order it get 3 inch inlet/outlet. then get a 3 inch catback. youll be set. for flowmaster...80 series is single in/dual out. 40 series is single in single out like the ss. you might want to look into some headers while your doing the exhaust. dpending on whether your planning some future mods you would get 1 5/8 or 1 3/4 (for mods). goo dluck.
