ok, long story but, i went to the speed shop today near me to order a flowmaster fo my 91 bird (jegs#389-42583)hoping to get there advertised 30hp and 40ft./lbs..
Well they hads to order it but they had a hooker aero chamber (#21720), wich the guy said would flow and sound better then the flowmaster.
So, later i went to my mechanic to get it installed. Well after getting the original muffler off we found that my tailpipes were 2 1/4" and the outlets on the hooker were 2 1/2"(same as flowmaster).
So i drove around for like an hour and a half w/o tailpipes(just the hooker muffler), looking thru the local stores(pepboys, aid auto, auto zone, etc.), for a reducer.
It sounded AWESOME!!! w/o the tailpipes, the exact sound i wanted.
UNTIL we put the tailpipes on, it sounded almost exact to stock, WHAT THE ****!!!
I was pissed
Why did it get quiter w/ the tailpipies on?
Should i have gone w/ the flowmaster above?
Will the flowmaster be louder?
Will it give the advertized gains?
Or how can i make my hooker louder?
(put sand in the vaseline....hahaha)

If it had the sound you were looking for get new tailpipes, the right size for the muffler. Get madrel bent so it doesn't restrict after the muffler. It seems to me if you do that it should sound close to what it did without the pipes.

Another Idea, get straight tailpipes that come staight out of the muffler to each side of the car.

Yeah, assuming it's quieter from the inside, I am thinking it's because more of the sound waves are just being directed rearward with the tailpipes vs. the straight-out method. Try standing at some point behind it and have someone rev it up for you to see if it sounds similar to what it was before the pipes. I don't think even 2 1/4"ers would have that much muffling quality. As for the tone, that might change slightly w/ bigger pipes... lemme know what you find!
