Diameter of exhaust system in relation to sound level

I was curious if anybody knew what effect exhaust system diameter has on noise level? For exmaple if I have an identical car/engine and one is fitted with headers and a 2.5" cat and cat-back, and the other is fit with headers and a 3" cat and cat-back, which will be louder. Is there a significant difference in the level?

Any info on this subject is appreciated,

Jason

All else being equal, the larger the pipe diameter, the louder the exhaust.

Thanks for the help JRR, I didn't think anybody had anything to say about it. I'll be throwing on a 3" system like the 350s had so maybe it'll sound better.

Thanks again,

Jason
