What do resonators do?

Not quite, buddy. A resonator is basically a small muffler that is mounted upstream in the exhaust system, before the muffler. Also, some companies make resonator tips that do the same thing, but are mounted in the exhaust tips. The purpose of a resonator is to quiet the exhaust, and to cancel out certain frequencies of sound. Some cars that sound like **** with only a muffler sound good with a resonator: my friend's 91 T-Bird SuperCoupe, for example. It has 2 factory resonators. Without them, it would have an annoying, buzzing exhaust tone. With them, it sounds like an electric motor.

My friend has a GMC Eagle and he put a 4.5 inch resonated tip on his car. When he was done he had me go rev it for him while he listened to it. He thought it sounded so great but I just thought it sounded like crap.
