American Thunder Flows

Ok, I don't have a car yet (I'm looking for an 87-up RS 305 camaro w/ a 5-speed hint hint), anyway, I'm doing a little research. I was wondering if anyone here has heard the Flowmaster American Thunder kit on a 305 camaro. I've heard it on a '92 Mustang 302, and it sounded pretty good, any help would be appreciated, also, just out of curiosity, what exhaust does everyone here have on their car?? THX Tim

It sounded great on my friend's 89 RS LO3, deep, throaty, nice low rumble, and it just screams at WOT.

Why are you looking for a TBI car? You'll regret it in the long run, the modding potential isn't that great, and even if you mod the **** out of it you'll be lucky to break into 14s.

MR....that was pretty stupid to say. NJSPEEDER is running low 14s with a stock cam and about a grand in motor mods. The modding potential on a TBI 305 is the same as a TPI 305. Its all on how smart u are.

BTW a 5 spd tbi car ran better than an auto TPI (5.0) car stock.

To MrJ-
I'm only 16, this will be my first car. I got some insurance qoutes, and it would be 27 dollars higher for me to own and insure a camaro, z-28 or Iroc, therefore I'm gonna go with an RS, for now. I also don't expect it to be extremely fast, it's my first car, maybe it will be later on, but not for a while anyway.

The modding potential IS NOT the same. The 305 TPI blows the 305 TBI away in every way. It's faster from the factory. It responds better to mods. Many have a better cam from the factory as well. Put a few hundred dollars in mods into a 305 TPI and mid/low 14s are quite attainable (not terribly impressive in the grand scheme of things), but put the same money into a 305 TBI and run mid 15s at best. Don't kid yourself. A 305 TBI wouldn't come within 8 carlengths of my car in a race. It's just too limited by its cam, ****ty swirl heads, small TBI bores, tiny exhaust manifolds, and all the rest, to be able to compete. If you guys want to make your TBI cars fast, do what Pablo did and get some NON-SWIRL PORT heads (TPI heads will work fine), port them, run a single plane carb manifold and an adapter for the TBI, and tear **** up. But don't expect to be anything but a laughing stock if you aren't willing to put the time and money in for the serious mods.

Not that I don't agree with you, MrJ, that the TPI is much more desirable and more easily modified, but my 89 RS TBI car has beat every 305 TPI (3 total, I don't what, if any, mods they had) car that I have ever raced w/ it, I beat a stock 350 TPI car and a 4.6L GT. I only have an open element, MSD coil, phenolic TB spacer,Hypertech chip, 3.42's, removed cat and Dynomax exhaust. My car ran 15.60's completely stock, so there not all bad.

Good work man.. you got a factory freak if it ran 15.6 stock. My point is just that it doesn't make sense to get a TBI car if you really want to go fast. Hell, it doesn't even make sense to get a 5.0 TPI car if you want to go fast either, I'll be honest. But the gap between the better 305 TPIs and the 350 TPI is much smaller than the gap between the 305 TBI and the 305 TPI. I see so many guys who didn't know what they were getting into and bought a TBI RS or Formula or what have you, and are frustrated with the car's performance.
